Just had a telephoneycall from a chap at Yell.com

£14 a week for an online ad. With that and the website I'm pretty covered online I reckon. Just got my shiney new biz cards through the door too and a nice white T with the logo on it. Now if I can keep my whites as white as Kirk I'll be onto a winner with just the one to wear ;D

Anyone else use Yell? Do you find it brings much work?

£728.00 per year isnt bad but depends how much business they bring in... and what type of optimisation they do for your website... You should look at using all the free classified listings as well

Got my yell add and link to website for £116 for the year ??? ??? ???

Aye? Well I'll need to be having words then. First payments no due for a month and they usually build a cancelation clause into it anyway saying before x date you can cancel and caosts nothing.

Ive just taken an ad out with yell foe the book. It was £500 with a free link to a one line ad online.
Gonna get a website set up soon but I can get that pretty cheap.

I submitted my link to yell.com and they rang me up 13 times in 2 days! They wanted about £350 for the year - basically a simple 1 page web page! Rubbish you could get a 5 page website for that! Type in Plasterer and the name of the place where you live and see they results you get - go with one of the companies on the 1st page anymore than 2 pages and you might as well not have a listing. Unless you are willing to work nationwide its better value to get listed with a top performing local directory. Local listings is the new big thing and yell.com aint the best at it - cos they are a national company - plus you will be competing with at least 20+ other plasterers who have coughed up £350.

i was almost ripped off by thomson local... cancelled it and ended up with a free listing anyway...
ive taken a few jobs off that number...

That's an interesting statistic. Is there much competition in your listing?

The thing is that yell and the like aren't really optimised for local listings - they are national directories - try the local directories they should be much better optimised for your area - plus they are smaller companies (even 1 bloke on his own) so you are a customer not a number and should get a better service. Before you hand over your cash check what page on google they come up on - if it aint page 1 or 2 they don't spend the big bucks cos they aint so hot at what they do.

I would play around with the bullet points a bit , try and make it stand out from the rest , they all seem pretty standard format that has been produced by yell , go ito your account and play with your listing to make it more appealing, try caps and bold lettering and i'm sure you can have up to ten bullet points , so make the most of your listing your self , try and incorporate some thing that no one else on that page has etc etc

valid points but search engines work on variables that you might not have access to and yell do. Do a search for yourself in google and see what page you come up on.

The big problem is that your page won't have what are called back links - which is a link from one website to another - your page will probably only have yell backlinks maybe say 6 - the 6 categories you are in - 6 is nothing you need 100+ for google page 1 local. If you have friends/family etc who write webpages get them to put your link (e.g. http://www.yel.com....) on their page and you'll get a better google rating. Either that or get people to click on your page which will generate web traffic - the more web traffic - the higher the listing.

You'll need to post the link for your business page 'cos otherwise it'll only generate web traffic for the yell page and not your ad.

well that's the ad live now.

Just done a couple of searches for plastering & screeding. Comes up first page if in my postcode or local area which is a big area, comes up 3rd page if searching in the wider area.

I'll see how it goes. At the moment I could do with any sort of advertising to generate work. Haven't had anything for a couple of weeks.
