Hi all I am new here and am looking for some advice on fibrous plastering on behalf of my father in law. He is currently renovating an old house and the cornice in a number of the rooms needs repairing. It is something he wants to tackle himself since he is a plasterer by trade but he has not done anything like this before.

We have done a bit of research and have decided to run the cornice in situ but need some detailed advice from your good selves on how to achieve the best results.

The cornice/mould is approx 2/3" inches thick at it thickest with the majority on the ceiling rather than the wall so can he use the same mix of casting plaster to build the whole thing up or should he use different thicknesses at different stages if that makes sense?

He knows that he will have to screw a batten to the wall for the profile to follow but how does he allow for the ceiling not being completely flat?

He has bought zinc sheet metal to make a profile but he would like some advice on how to cut it neatly? What is the best way to cut the curves? Nibblers then files?

Basically if you could give us as much advice as possible about each stage, especially about how to make the zinc profile and setting up the battens on the wall, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Tom.
