i make £300 a day skimming easy.. why would i drop back rendering floating and screeding for twice the work.
im only subbing without the paperwork and hassle.
i know lads that just tack n dab on £400 a day with a gang.

For 3 times the money (y) machine??;)

The building trade has changed/is changing. It is becoming more modular. Trades being pared back in a minimalist fashion. It's a form of de-skilling with some being bettter at one single aspect of a particular trade, skimming for instance, or brickies that can't raise corners, coz they always use profiles, or can only work in stretcher bond. It's been going on forever.....roof trusses...chippy's all said " they're not really tradesmen, they can't even cut a roof on, they have to use trusses".....
But here we all are....

its not going to get any better either

Is this better for those that can do it all then or worse? Opinions???
The current situation should be good for those who manage well, by that I mean those who plan, schedule and prioritise. Builders and developers are running tighter businesses in order to maximise profit. Dot and dab came about to shorten drying times,as a by- product a reasonably flat wall can be achieved quite quickly by someone with minimal training - less cost, quicker turnaround, more profit.
If you run a good outfit, do a good job, and can fit in with the builders programme you will thrive, whether or not you specialise. Sips panel building is growing for exactly the same reasons.....a moderately skilled man can work in a team building like this, but it will not mean the end of carpenters.

to be honest I think it might be to the failing of the all rounder.... "specialists" have a great USP... although reality is they are just good at one thing...

I loose more render jobs than I gain...I think this is as I refer to myself as a plasterer on company details etc...

By contrast my mate only renders and subsequently doesn't state plastering anywhere with company name or when talking...

If we both quote the same render job he will get every time where as I will be overlooked as a plasterer!

I think sadly there's only us plasterers that are bothered about who can do what etc...

Customers prefer to pay someone that does a certain aspect full time I think!!!

yep... and to be honest I think I do as well... rather pay an expert than someone that knows a bit.... (not a dig but how it is all perceived)

I only take my cars/bikes to specialists... I would get a tiler in to tile but if he specialised in floor tiles I would not ask him to tile walls :D

I believe each to there own . Never met a other trade who says they can plaster. Dot n dab to a good standard. I can tile but can't charge for it as I have no idea how long it would take me .

More you can do, can only be good for you (providing you do it well obviously)
Means if you run out of skimming you can do outsides, vise versa etc

It's b*ll***s...... reckon it's better to be ace at something then being good at most things. I cannot skim 100m2 a day but I could probably do more different jobs..... end result is I'm slower and therefore earn less. I hate it but that's life, I still earn more then some shitter jobs and nobody really tells me what to do as such.

I can plaster.... and dot n dab.... and tile.... and render...... and screed..... probably more, all to good standard. Doesn't mean much though as I get owned on speed

i know a lad with a gang around my area who only does domestic ....cove screed all renders internals etc....got every gadget and machine in his garage.
i know what he charges ive seen his quotes many times.
earns a f**k**g fortune.
i know lads who just board or just skim or both with gangs on 3k most weeks.
i know great lads who do everything but like life to much to care about money.
plastering has always been what you put into it is what you get out of it.
its how much drive you have in you.

2 lads on my last site ...were rendering coving dabbing tacking flat out all day on £130 a day each.
all they wanted in life was to leave at 2'0clock!!!!

mad world.

i also know folks ...millionairs who wouldnt know what a trowel is.
that run big plastering firms.
I work for some minted builders who have us in before jobs ready but just want bodies on job . Some weeks we done next to note because stuffs not ready bit they think note to paying us. Makes me wonder what money they have in job

money to burn.

yup I know someone like that as well... quite funny really... a first class bull shitter that has made his money

I've known mediocre craftsmen who have the gift of gab and can land the posh jobs but only do 'meh' work on their best day. Meanwhile guys who are masters of their trade a stuck building track homes where the builder couldn't care less that they are capable astounding feats of craftsmanship.

Being able to talk the big talk often trumps everything else. Its a sad reality.
