Hi all,

Did a course in this believe it or not but been so long i've now forgotten how to apply!

I'm using 10mm beads over the base coat, when applying the colour coat do i do it in 2 coats, scratch the first, top next day or can it be done in one coat (2 passes)?

Cheers ears

I mean scratch coat one day then two coats wet on wet, and finish same day this time of year. That's what I mean.

this gear is best machined on but if you have to do it by hand apply in two passes one after the other but the golden rule is you must never break through to the first pass when scratching back or you will get halos or funny texture marks so keep the first pass back as much as poss and behind the beads and fill out with second.......uuuuuuuuhhhhhh and breathe

yea goody when i did my course this happened to a lad he scratched back to the first and got colour variation. As you say keep the first coat tight...so theres no need to scratch the first pass? just apply wet on wet? only scratch if topping next day?

you got it butt....look into getting a swiss trowel...blonesy sells them for a tenner. well handy for getting the gear on quick, thick and sort of ruled cos its two handed. Forget the hawk & trowel mate.....when you been machining you don't have patience for slow hand methods. load up the thing with as much gear as it'll hold and two hand spread it up the wall bending your knees and using your legs not just relying on your arms. Hold it like a featheredge. Far more forgiving on your joints too. you won't look back

if hand applying get it on a board and stand and go for it in two passes over your basecoat and use a hawk and trowel keep first pass tight and take any lines out then second heavier an rule as you go

do you use a swiss on thin coat grand? If your fast with hawk etc id bet money youd be quicker with a swiss and less stress one the one arm too

here you go.....not the last word in technology but I find it a proper useful tool....pretty much replaced the spatting I used to do

Link Removed it's the double handed swiss trowel

swiss are mint on thin coat finish but cant see how it would work on mortar like mono butt ?

Ive seen Spanish use them but not on Mono only on one coat internal, normaly the Spanish use a plastic 2 handled jobby about 800mm long for hand apllied MP, works for them they certainly get it quick with it, never tried it myself.

If it were me there would be 1 lad layin on ded ded fast just putting gear on the wall in on stroke but enough to cover a certain area no messing about then i would come behind with the swiss and push the gear into all the places and spread it so the dood with the hawk and trowel has a rapid job and aint worrying about getting it on every inch of wall he just gets the right amount on and keeps moving, the swiss does the work you can push with two hand and your legs so and really work a big area. no man gets tired or sore as quick. both guys job is easy no changing about and its fast

I think germans lay the gear onto the trowel straight from the keller and do the same two hand jobby but for me i think its quicker to have a layer onner with a hawk and a pusher/spreader. It systemises the task.

blones will be along now to tell me I should be spraying it with a ritmo and it will be even quicker. I prob will get a ritamos in the future for the thin coats but not just yet
