had a job to say 2 small celings on pboard..rooms no bigger that 3x3 or 4x4 easy job..so i scrimed the joints and mixed up..for sum reson i dint run any scim down the points first..and after apply 2 coats of scim some scrim could be seen shadowin frew the plaster.

i did it like this

applyed 1 coat 2 both celings went back and flattend off

mixed up again 2coated celings and flatten off..

then wet them up and trowled up

then again applyed a small amount of water and trowled up..mostly taking off water marks..

was a hot morning aswell so i left it at that job done..

got a call saying not happy..dint fink i put 2 coats on and can see to much scrim and has run his fingers over it and it doesnt feel smooth even.(its not dry yet)

i dont get it. im not crap i do nice smooth walls allday long..

so im goin back to moro to have a look
i was thinking of mis coatin the celing to see what they look like ..i no he is fussy..but i reali cant see how it can be ruff?

maybe i could off waited and gave 1 last trowl over..? any ideas..

do you knock up quite thin oasis? or nice and thick..
reason being is if the boards a bit uneven youll get it on thick one side of the edge and thin on the other...
other thing is you shouldnt really be wetting a ceiling back up... you just turn it to fat..
you should be flattening it when its ready to be flattened, no water needed..
do you end up takin loads off again when you wet it up?
either way.. if hes gonna be that fussy you can bet that hell paint it real thin makin no attemp to cover any marks, in fact he'll go out of his way to show em up... and believe me if you can feel em, youll see em when its painted..
could always stick a bit of pva over the bad bits and slaver some easy fill over em, sand it in a hour or so job done...

tell him to paint it or u give it a coat and if there are any defects then u will correct them this is why i hate private work if i ever take jobs on i make sure they are perfect give them an extra trowel then run the fire exit sign over it ppl love shiny walls and celings

the first coat was fairly thick and the second one a it thiner..for some reason i allways use a bit of water when ever i trowl up and i find it drags even when flattening some times..and yes i do apply quick so its not that it drys out 2 fast,,

o yea im ganna paint it my self to mor and then see....fact is ..if i can sort it this time and learn will be better that reskiming 2 fresh celings...they allways pull in quick so i would have to do 1 at a time.

i will try not to wet up when flattening from now on..and yet some times i do take a bit off...

instead of flattening off your ceilings before u second coat try to lay your first coat on a little smoother this will get your second coat on quicker and should help you out

tapered edge dont come into it because he didnt cover his joints before he put the spread on thats the main reason his scrim is showing

make sure u sand the scrim that u can see and before u paint it up mate or u will have the same problem

also try not to take too much off if u need a little bit of water use it just dont soak it or you will just creat way too much fat sayin that ive worked with lads who are constatly soakin there walls an it comes out spot on it just gets on my tits hahah

if the scrim is showing after u put the second coat on run the edge of your trowel over it to cut the scrim then run your trowel over that area again and it should get rid of it

should never wet when flatten....flatten then a little water just to lubricate wet trowel then dry......if your really smooth and wet trowel is hardly nessasry....me personally 1st coat lay...fatten..2nd coat lay then dry faltten...wet trowel then dry trowel...

its the same reason you gotta cover artex 1st coat really..
if not it'll show through even when youve topped it..
if you find its building up on the trowel bear with it cos 9 times out of ten youll go over a hollow next sweep and it'll all come off again..
but to be honest if it starts building up on your trowel straight away your flattening too soon or throwing too much water at it..

we all get it from time to time oasis... sometimes i'll throw a trowelfull over it from the next set (if there is one)..

thanks..i see were iv been goin wrong with this now..some times i fill the scrim and sumtimes i dnt but..i every now and then i get scrim showing up..i allways fort paint would cover it..ill see ta moro.

went bk to day the guy had put pen marks all over the celin were he fort it was not good..bout 100 per celing!

but i mis coated the celing for him and showed him to now find any probs..and there was about 2 marks on each celing after that..so all was good but ill take better care next time., ::)

9 times out of 10 u will get away with stuff like that with site work u just need to pick your game up a little wen doin private

and price lol i only charged £220 for the 2 celings..was in at 8am and garn by 11am not 2 bad going

I alway use a very small amount of water when flattening off. Particulary at the corners to stop it dragging. I use a spray bottle at this stage rather than a brush. I don't really get any problems with fat as the plaster is only starting to firm up and not actually setting.

For me, the key to hiding any high points (poor boarding, scrim tape etc) is to let the trowel glide over the wall or ceiling as opposed to applying any real pressure. All you want to be doing is geting it reasonably flat before applying the secong coat. Once I've flattened off the first coat, I'll go round the edges / corners with a brush then get the second coat mixed up.

1st post since the site changed....good to be back! :)

you might get away with it on site but i'd never leave a domestic job like that ......theres no excuses because youve troweld it up 4 times

i would have at least offered to cover up youre poor joints with a bit of fast set .........before you walked

learnt from this to day..did a new ceiling over board artex and scrim..made sure not to use much water and used nice thick skim and went over all the joints first ..celin was 100% spot on to day it could win awards..
