I do a fair amount of damp proof rendering and i often have to come out 30mm plus. One firm i work for is hot on removing the socket boxes and getting waterproofer'd muck behind them as they can be a weak spot in damp proofing (another firm i work for doesn't bother with this).

I found an effective method to form an accurate rendered socket recess is to keep a few old metal socket boxes and to cut a flap in the bottom and bend the flap inwards, hold them in place, render behind and around them and once the muck has firmed up enough to pop them out again ready for new ones to be fitted. Catch it right and you can form a perfect recess no matter how deep the finished render is.

I even use a bit of shutter release agent on them now so i can slide them out the next morning if i need to. WD40 works as well.

Push a margin trowel in level with the edge of the box all the way round to create 1mm clearance before fully set which gives the enough play to take them out easily.

Hope this helps you out one day.

cheers
