Hello all

Well I have finally finished my apprentship and I am now ready to go alone!!

To be honest I am s**ting myself but I have got some jobs lined up so its now or never.

My question today is regarding the purchase of a van. I've been offered a Ford Connect LWB TDCI ex RAC windscreen fitters van. It has sheving in the back, FSH, 44,000 miles and my friend only wants £2750 for it because he is moving to Austraila. Would this van be suitable for me to start or should I be looking for something a little bigger?

Any geeral advice would be appreiated

Thank you for any replies

Got a vauxall combo, which is smaller. Slight bit off alteration I manage to fit everything I need into it, including a cement mixer. Got a couple of metal studs comming down from roof, so spot board, stand and a few other bits up there. Gotta a shelf down cab end, so generaly van looks half full. Main problem is getting plaster board around. Got a roof rack that holds 8x4's. Have to put a tarps on when it rains, which is a pain. Hold the lot down with 4 g clamps. Wanted a connect, but didn't have the money. If you sort your van out it should be ideal.

It's cute, like a little baby Transit. Don't forget to tickle it under the front grille and speak to it in a baby voice, just before you get in.

;D Baby transit.

My mate says he can get 8x4's INSIDE his lwb connect

Go for it mate sounds ok at that price.
It'll manage you for now, then you can get the connects big brother later on ;)

thats a good price and a good van. Only thing is boards but just bung em on the roofrack and carry a tarp for rain as said. Not that big a deal plus you can park it dead easy and good on juice. ;) good luck.

I has 1 for 3 months then sold it to get the new transit it frustrated me that it was really small and pointless for somone in our game . But I like a lot of space in my truck others like compact . Good price though

remember something about the passenger seat folding down flat as an option allowing boards to slide in to the cab area

Yeah that's what my mate said & like I said above he can get 8x4's in, when the seats down.
You wouldn't think so though would ya.

It is a small van but it'll manage him for now & at a decent price too.
I know spreads that work out of astra estates, escort vans, 1 i know has got a people carrier for work ;D
But they can deliver boards these days you know ;D

so there's no bulkhead between you and your tools in one of these vans?

Don't like the thought of having a crash and all your tools hurtling towards your bonce in the front.

other criteria when choosing a van include being able to stand up for a piss ;)

I NEVER stand for a s h 1 t

i'v got a connect and its spot on mate, does about 40 mpg not the fastest van in world but other than that i cant fault it.

mines got a cage in the back that opens behind the passenger seat when you fold seat down, not sure if you can get 8x4s in but will take 6x3s no probs. cage comes in handy because if any little c.u.n.t.s try breakin in they have to get through that first.

mines 04 paid £3500 but its in mint condition not a mark on it. ford are a good make mate, they are built easy and easy to fix. in my experience stay away from vauxhauls (different parts for every make, model and you usually have to take them to bits to change something simple) and french vans, cars and everything else cos they are s**t.

1 more thing there are no workshop manuals for connects, but like i said there easy enough to service and look after.

hope this helps mate, good look with it.

To small mate.
Youll need a big van.also the height of the van comes in handy when loading it up etc.
I got a06 reg lwb Ldv maxus high roof.Although this van is not the best in its class by far its a lot of van for a little money.
I can carry everything i need and get to everything i need with ease!!
Buying a small van is ok if you do small stuff, and carry small ,light things. But being a plasterer you dont.
By the time you got half dozen large buckets ur kit beads plaster a few small 6"3 s boards in there u wont be able to move if you can get that all in.
With large van you get all ur kit a pallet of plaster 20 boards and still be able to move around easily.
The price of the van sounds very good but thats it.

ive got a berlingo because at the time i couldnt afford anything bigger unless i wanted an ancient transit. the other day i had all my kit, including 7 tread steps, half a dozen bags of plaster and 14 6x3s. when ive got boards in it i can just sit the beads ontop. its not ideal but its more than capable. i will eventually get something like a tranny or vw but im in no rush.

haha the bloke i was doing the job for didnt believe i got it all in there. i call it my tardis ;D i've got all my levels and board props on a shelf in the roof so they are out the way so all thats on the floor is a few buckets, tool bucket, hop up, spot is stood up against the side of the van, steps rest on top of the half bulk, or if i need to put boards in i put them in then the steps on top. like i said its not ideal but its getting me from job to job with all my gear and mats so i cant complain really.

oh believe me phil, in a couple of years im gonna have a lwb hitop transit all decked out like flatboys, everything will have its place. and ill have plastic trowels, boardmates, trow hawks, blade runners, might even fork out for one of carpings henrydysonpft machines

Yes nice one steve my van is just full of crap and everytime i look in the back i say to myself i wish i bought a bigger van.Dont know how i managed out of a car years ago but always kept it tidy. Now i just chuck everything in the van at the end of the day, drive home lock it and get in the house,im just lazy.

same here got iveco daily van racked out --but still can"t find fluck all

maybe a 7.5 ton box lorry would be the answer??

Thank you for all your advice

Steve Cov - I would be interested in looking how you can get all you kit and Mats in the back of a Berlingo!! any chance you could upload a photo of the storage in the back of the van so I can think how best to kit out my Connect?

Cheers mate

theres no special nack to it mate, ill take a pic tomorrow though. i've got 2 bits of steel hanging off bolts from holes in the ceilings, thats where anything long goes. big gorilla tub behind passenger seat. that holds any trowels, corner trowel, scratcher, floats, margin tools etc. big tool box next to that with saws, chalk line, crowbar, spare tapes. anything i dont use daily. then just plonk everything else in. steps behind passenger seat and folding hop up on top.

like i said its not ideal but its more than good enough to get me going. considering you see some blokes working out of a car ;D the other day i had 14 6x3s resting on the headrests, half a dozen bags, all that kit, and beads on top of the boards.

hi, I like the way you have sorted out the top of your van for your levels and straight edges etc- I will sort out something similar in mine soon. Got a Citroen dispatch last week. As Im just starting out I thought a smaller van may be the go- I better on fuel easyer parking etc. Done a job today in a large old house- S**t my vans now full of dust sheets and my gear and some make shift staging that I used for the high ceiling and its all in there no probs.

ive got lwb connect had it about 2 yrs its been a great van but had to get a full roof rack for boards etc mines also got the folding cage behind the seats but my mate insist on having seat the miserable c**t. when i grow up im getting a vw transporter

i downsized to a connect from a mazda e2200-it saves me runnin around pickin stuff up free of charge-if its a few bags then cool-anything bigger gets delivered at the customers expense-if its site work then its all there anyway
