I have removed the old laths from a stud wall, and want to double board it for a couple of reasons... but ive not double boarded before and am trying to work out how best to place/stagger the boards to avoid joins etc

i.e. lay on the first layer of 8x4s horizontally then the second layer vertically
or
fix em all vertically but staggered on different studs...

PS: The ceiling height is bang on 2500 so staggering vertically will involve lots of cuts and wastage.

your thoughts appreciated

First skin horizontal just put enough screws into hold them the screws in the second skin houds it all together.

i don't even cut my first skin to rest on studs let it fly over etc, and as lucius say's just pin with a few screws and fix with screw through your second layer (these obviously have to be cut back to the nearest stood if they are not set out) make sure you mark where your studs are 0n the first layer if your not used to double boarding

You could board it diagonally if you wanted too mate all that ,atters is the boards are staggerd

Just bung the first layer on top of the studs, they do not need to be cut as said, they can just sail over the studs, the firts layer is only for creating extra depth, then the top layer board a normal.

whats the couple of reasons your double board it?

whats the couple of reasons your double board it?

Its a partition wall that was put up to separate the lounge from the porch/hallway area leading to the stairs. So drafts from front door and noise mainly

But also as its close to 4m long and 9' high, I want a good, solid surface for plastering as its the main wall that catches the sunlight in that room... and i want it too look spot on.

Im a little way off skimming yet but ill post pics when the room is done - before n after like :o)
