What's the best/easiest way to design a logo free?

Just something really simple I'm after.

Find a logo somewhere on the world wide web. Use a photo editor like gimp if you don't have one and auto exact the bits. Change colours. Maybe flip it. Take other bits from logos and add to it. Or.. Cut and make bits out of paper then use a smartphone to take pictures .Auto cut them and assemble using gimp or similar. Change colour of the bits. Done... I don't know what I'm doing with gimp but I watch youtube for each action and copy.
