Ceiling and first-floor concrete hearth

Evening all,

I had a fun morning pulling down a lath & plaster ceiling (messy job). It's revealed a concrete hearth from the first floor, which sits a bit proud of the joists.

I have two concerns:

1) I'm not sure I'll be able to plasterboard flush without knocking some (or all) of it away.
2) The bigger concern, what's holding it in place? It was just plastered over from downstairs and is carpeted over (and walked on) from above. I'm guessing it's poured concrete around some wooden supporting frame to join it with the breast?

Anyway - tips? Should I remove it? Is it sound? Pic below...

Just pack your ceiling down with tile batton Derek.
