Most European powers were 'colonising' different parts of the globe so as to take advantage of (stealing?) the mineral wealth, which in turn kept them wealthy enough to keep an army to defend their borders from each other. If GREAT Britain had stood by as a mere spectator in this land grabbing then we wouldn't have been strong enough to see off potential invaders.
