Looking for some advice on plaster boarding a ceiling. What's the easiest way to do this? Across the beams, same direction as beams or just whatever way works using less cuts? thanks

As above ^ across joists :RpS_thumbsup: if you board the same direction as the joist there's more chance it will crack.

Don't worry - your plasterer will advise you:RpS_thumbup:

Dint think it would take long, yeah thanks for the advice however some people like to try to do jobs there self like plastering and sometimes require information to asset them, hence what I thought this forum was all about. If I was getting a plastering in I would not be asking for advice would I? why is it some tradesmen don't like to help others out? Are you scared of competition? If you are as good as you think you are you will always have plenty of work regardless of compitition or given advice. Perhaps you lose work not because of better or cheaper quotes but because of your attude? Only a thought.

And you are entitled to your thoughts mister........I must have missed you properly introducing yourself and outlining your background/plans for this work as I thought you had just came on here asking about boarding/beading without the courtesy of an introduction.......just a thought:RpS_thumbup:

Sorry dint realise that's how this forum worked. Do I need to detail the job in hand before asking for help?. My mistake I have asked questions before when I first joined the forum and stated the work on there - not having a dig just pains me when people ask for help and get cocky replys. If proper spreads don't like helping diy'ers out then the forum should be changed to say it's only for full time plasters. Thanks to the helpful people on here it's really appreciated.

Gotta agree with the bloke. This site is becoming very unwelcoming to newcomers/diyers.This forum is turning into a pack of people who talk about whatever they want and exclude newcomers. Perhaps the DIY section needed asap. If no one posts i assume the forum will die and then then we all suffer.

this could all get very contentious very quickly.

1. It is a PLASTERERS forum as i understand it, where other plasterers join up and help each other out.

2. It is not a DIY forum, this is DIY and Home Improvement Forum - DIYnot.com3. We do welcome questions from the public who think they may be suffering at the hands of a cowboy/chancer.

3. Maybe your right Windy lad we should introduce a diy section. but we do have a newbie/beginner section where the most basic off questions should be asked

but i do understand the frustration of the lad's at times when people come onto the site asking basic plastering questions so they can save a few quid, and in retrospect feel sorry for the ones that get it in the neck that are genuine diy'ers and not chancers, but hey were all adults and i,m sure a few sarcy comments won't be causing world war three any time soon.

Sorry FireOne, I will hold my hands up & say I was wrong. I was just checking out the new posts last night and seen your name on two threads asking what are (to a plasterer) very basic questions. I was away from my beloved laptop last week & missed your introduction, so - armed with the limited info I had before me last night - I wrongly made the assumption that you were seeking info without any introduction, something that personally p*sses me off. Please accept my apologies:RpS_blushing:

Warrior - thats true, but he isnt to know that its more for the tradesman than for the DIYer asking for advice! no need for people to be rude and cuntish! the guy isnt doing it to go out there and nick our jobs, and if he is, we all know it takes years to become a spread, so hardly a worry, is it.

Fireone your asking the basic of basic of questions!that's why you'll get smart arse answers .just stating the obvious as for diy "ers" I HATE EM All ! am sure the sparks forum would be up in arms when asking basic spark questions !!

Sparks are known for their clique attitude and dodgy hand shakes, all hush hush with that lot! never stop moaning and charge rip off prices, *****.

Agreed freerider sparks there the pits on site!!but tbh spreads ever started for a firm on site ?it's like my trowel bigger than yours ! Your down there miles from water powder etc I suppose were all the same but sparks they are rats!!

Its trades in general, everyone thinks they are better than everyone else! "what, you use a 1" brush for corners, your s**t, who taught you, cowboy, courser, kill yourself, everyone knows you only brush the corners once with a 6inch wall paper brush, and your starting top right, who the **** taught you that, everyone knows you start top left, you must be s**t", ALL a load of b*ll***s and everyones as bad as eachother (apart from me, Im nice as pie ;) )

Bubbles you're becoming a bit of a knob mate he's a diyer and you don't have to answer every thread that starts like this with ask the plasterer it's not the first time is it, I've got gripes and that's with people who want to go on a course and take the piss I don't take it out on Joe bloggs doing renovations personally I think it's disgusting and you're a disgrace to the forum and if I had it my way I'd have you banned

Agree with windy I rarely post now. This site has changed for the worse its quite simple really if you do not have a constructive point to make then dont post at all its not helpful and makes us look stupid. I dont care how many times the same question gets asked by different people.

Plus as it's his computer he can come on here and type what he wants he doesn't have to do an introduction no one does ...sorry mate is it you're forum ?

I understand your frustration and I'm sure most spreads do get annoyed with people who do these courses you see advertised and then ask for information on here then nick your work, I can assure I'm not here for that reason. Yeah I agree they are basic questions and I kinda know the answers already but just wanted a simple answer to confirm my thoughts, hence the posts. a simple conformation but my mind at rest as I cant afford to make mistakes. To clear things up this sums my situation up, I have a job well 2 jobs ( in my eyes the best job in the world lol) I'm not trying to become a plaster or steal anybody's work. I used to labour for a friend a long time ago and I learned how to skim through this.My sisters now ex fella as f****d off and left my sister with a house that she can not afford and can't sell because it needs a lot of work, mainly updating, re plastering ect. After all the bills mortgage, gas credit cards bills he ran up she is left with £40 yes £40 to feed on for the month. As you professional spreads demand footballers pay packets this is never going to be an option to get someone in so I'm left to do it. I'm able to get a good finish but I'm slow, I will only do 1 wall at a time. As money is tight I cannot afford to make mistakes and have to re do work and this is the reason I'm asking basic questions just to double check and confirm before ball sing it up. As I'm having to pay for materials myselfI thank every one for there help so far.

Listen fireone footballers wage?get in the real world .go and board your ceiling and see how hard it is.sound bloc boards I hope 3metre ones as well !I resent that comment get back to b&q with all the other firemen.

Gotta admit, fireone, what the **** is with the comment about footballers pay? You think 30-40grand a year, on a good year, is to much for a job that takes years to master? Hmm

just to add

most of us are self employed ,running a business with all the costs that go with it too......

just remember we have to deduct these from our daily rate/price per job

have to say there are easier ways to make a living :RpS_thumbup:

fair play to you fireone for helping out your sister though in her situation

We are not all hush hush!!!
You know how much we love it when we don't curl our wires up in the boxes so you can trim them up about 2 inches too short.
Or the classic skimming over the socket so we start to think "Did I forget to wire that?"

But, spunky dearest - I prefer my kind of answers to yours:RpS_thumbup:

u were doing alright till this post. uv made urself look a right nob on the money part. spreads are one of the worst paid trades on site. and definatly in the top one or 2 hardest trades. come and spend a week with one of the guys on here and let us no how much ud want to do it full time.

i sypathise with ur sisters situation tho, it happened to me, not quite £40 a month for food, but bloody hard work. although on my wage, i just had to do an extra day a month and i was eating caviar again

By footballers wage I ment how much you guys charge. My sister had a guy round for a quote last year to plaster her hallway, stares and landing. The quote was £1000 and he said it would take 4 days. I did it myself and it cost £50 for the plaster ok it took me nearly 8 days spread across a month but what a saving. Finish is bang on, Walls straight, no trowel marks. So Nearly £250 a day is that not footballers wages. A different guy wanted £450 to do her kitchen. Board the ceiling, and skim all Walls. Quoted 2 days for the work. £100 for materials tops leaving £350 for 2 days work.

Fireone you have to take into account all the overheads we have running of a van, tax, all the jobs you have to go out and price before you land one, the fact you work for yourself and dont get holiday pay, so all these factors are usually in the price and alot of the domestic boys are not constantly in work so when it come down to it we dont earn a fortune compared to the like of plumbers and sparks.
