I know it's plasterers forum but i can't be arsed to join a brickie forum ;)

I am about to build a small porch extension and a will be using Simpson Strong Tie to join old wall to new. My problem is that the existing wall is a farmhouse stone wall so i havnt a flat abutment

Can and should i use a stone cutter and channel a void and chisel out a flat(ish) surface to connect ties?

oh, and while your on i plastered a ceiling yesterday and on my second trowel when flattening i kept getting dry bits ??? am i putting it on to thin on first coat or leaving it to long to flatten?
