best mix for completing same day

Yep doping it up with a few handfuls of cement does the trick

Like Fatarm suggested, rapid setting cement. Lafarge make one and some merchants will stock it.

sharp or plastering sand or dont it matter ?

There's a world of difference. Some plasterjng sand near me is mega sharp. To much imo. Others too soft. It's a case of knowing your merchants.

Using rapid then going ontop same day sounds like it may cause problems to me . Either you priced it wrong and should be 2 days or use ocr mate
