Bad plastering, painting, or both?

Hi all,

Firstly I got to say hats off to you guys who do this. I had no idea what an art it is until now that I own my own walls for the first time.

Got our new to us house skimmed (240sq m), to get rid of the rough textured walls. Largely I think it looks good however there are a few places I’m not happy with. One room in particular has a number of issues.

Most aren’t visible straight on, but rather when you look at the wall at an angle. I’m not sure if I’m being fussy, but would like some opinions. I didn’t spot these problems when it was just the plaster so I’m not certain if some of the issues are bad painting rather than plaster?

What is the correct way to rectify the problems? If it’s sitting proud, can one sand the area, reprime and repaint? If its an indent can one use some sort of filler? As you will see it’s mostly around edges.

Thanks!

The plastering and painting isn't the best, sand down all the rough and high spot areas, and filler the indentations and blemishes and sand them back aswell

Thanks for the reply Stewie. I had read you shouldn’t sand Gypsum plaster so I think that’s what has me confused. What grit sandpaper, 80?

Also what filler would you recommend, just normal Polyfilla?

I’m actually in South Africa where the plaster is known as Rhinolite but I think it’s the same stuff that you call British Gypsum and the same parent company.

The wife thinks I’ve gone mad, going around in the evening shining a light on the walls and looking at them at odd angles. I guess she has a point right, very few walls are going to look perfect in that way? It is after all a manual process and not a machine doing the job.

Not your fault. You've been caspered. Was the spread Scottish?

@Casper gets about and no mistake the rough jock t**t. Can't pick up any local work see?

Anyhow dont try to sand skimcoat. Smear whatever filler it is you have in SA over any lumps or hollows and sand that. Won't make it flat but it'll hide tbe ridges.

Yes it was definitely a Scottish guy with a very dark tan. Some of my bottles of whiskey also seem a little lighter but I’m not pointing fingers.

Ok, so even where it’s raised, you put a little filler and then sand that? Seems you would be making it higher than it already is then? Sorry I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.

Don't use polyfiller as it sets harder then plaster so you will sand the plaster back first. Use easi fill

No you'll just fill the ridges and make them less noticeable. Youll see how it works when you start.
