Knocking a wall down today at home. Extension from the 70s. There's a grey plasterboard nailed to the wall with sparkles in it on the face. Any ideas ?
 
Could be. Likely only a asbestos cement boarding. If in doubt get a specialist out. It's the safety of your own family after all.
 
Just remove it, get all clobbered up in the safety gear job done and a good clean up afterwards, Let's face it if you get a specialist company in that's all they will do but will charge you a very handsome price

So potentially harming someone else aswell as yourself is ok then?
It may contain it it may not but a self test kit is the easiest and most cost effective option.
It it Asbestos DIY removal still isn't worth the risk. It's not just a case of mask up sheet up and bag up. Once disturbed the fibres are airborne so you can't just take your kit off and get back to work.
An just putting it all in your black bin isn't the safe thing to do.
People will say you'll be fine if you take care but I bet none would bet there life on it.
You may be fine removing it but is it really worth the potential risk?
 
Know of an old fella who although not well is still alive having worked with it when younger no protection etc , but his wife died of abestosis they reckon from shaking his overalls out before washing :(
 
My mates father was recently diagnosed with it, wouldnt take any chances with that stuff. Alot of us have probably already been exposed to it in old plaster in renovation work?

If it was me I would remove it myself no problems, so yes I'd bet my life on it, it's not exactly a skilled job, the biggest problem is disposing of said material, if it's just a small amount it would probably go in my back bin too
 
I would take it down no worries at all obviously with full ppe.
Easiest way is to get rid of it is to get a few hippo bags from wickes cost like £75 quid, they will collect it after you called them. They charge by the bag not the contents. Let them sort it out as a waste carrier.

My Dad came down with asbestosis (He passed away back in 2000). They used to spray asbestos onto metal pans & beams back in the 1950's & 60's. The attitude back then was "real men" don't need to wear masks. We also used to throw in a shovel full of asbestos with every batch of stucco mud that went into the pump, it did a great job of keeping the water from seperating from the mud in the pump hoses, and it kept the moisture in the stucco after it was sprayed on the walls. I don't know if back then they really had masks available to the workers. I guess I'm just a wussy, I keep a 3m 2 filter mask in my tool bucket at all times, and put it on every time I have to breath dusty crap like when I'm mixing or sanding.
 
Soak your clothes in water, soak the board in water, soak the surrounding area in water, get your lab to mist you with the hose while you are removing it, wear a P3 respirator, don't use power tools. Bag it up with your clothes. Get the lab to hose you down (butt naked) change into new clothes. Job done.
 
Plasterer I met recently 53 absolutely f**ked only 15% lung capacity, got 6 months to live. Didn't have asbestosis, just damaged his lungs from breathing in all the sh*t over the years, taking down ceilings etc without a mask.
 
Some of the posts on here make me chuckle. One minute you're all banging on about chancers without a clue undercutting your prices by not doing a proper job. The next you're claiming doing a half arsed job that pikeys would be ashamed of is OK. :rolleyes:

You know those video clips of people working in flip flops or teetering about on a building with no scaffold that we all laugh at? Have you seen the ones with Billy Bigballs removing asbestos? :LOL:

It's not about undercutting. If he's like playing by the books he's gonna be fine. H&S got invented as there are a fair bit of idiots out there.
 
Rang a joiner a few years back who i hadn't seen for a while, I got 3/4 lofts off him a year. "Alright bollox you still alive?"..................."just about" oh dear that wasn't appropriate lol but he took it well, was dead a month later of asbestosis. His missus got paid around £30000 before he died from some fund put to the side. I remember saying "that was quick" he said "they don't f**k about with this s**t". Top bloke around 70 still grafting but it got me thinking, I read an article a while back about this being a con. A whole industry has been built out of removing this stuff and if you knew who the big players are who started it you would be shocked. He is the only bloke I know who has died of this and I've been in the game over 27 years I've not even met anyone who has a friend or relative who has died of it but I'm sure there are. I'm not saying the desease doesn't exist but I'm pretty sure they can't diagnose it, it's just the symptoms and it's a big pay out shut the f**k up and let's not say no more. So in theory the disease should be gone in say 30 years? Before anyone kicks off especially them that have family who have passed from the symptoms of asbestosis I'm not dismissing it, I just think it's odd more people aren't dying of it or are we dying from something else and it's easy to pass it off or bunch it all together and get your pay out and say no more? Just a thought :)

That is a good point flynny is teh asbeestos removal game only a short lived business... how much asbestos is left?

Our local household waste site takes it if its double bagged and what not
 
A mate of a mate is an asbestos surveyor and he came and had a look today. I asked him a few questions about it all.
Firstly he said plasterers are now the 2nd most likely people to die from asbestos related Illness behind plumbers.

Artex is pretty much safe. The problems are a lot of artex was put straight over asbestos boards. We then go in and screw into it or pull in down unknowingly.

Also just the amount of different substrates we hack off, screw into and pull down containing asbestos is scary.

Not trying to be c**t and belittle a serious illness but I don't know any plasterers, who have suffered and I don't ever recall any members saying it on any of the forums I have been a part of, for over ten years so unless in the future it will be problem or a coverup for another problem it just doesn't add up.
 
No I'm the same. I know no1 that's a plasterer. But oddly my old neighbour died of it at about 60 and she was a nurse

Which in itself is odd because by rights everyone who worked with her over the last forty years should have it.i know they could of went seperate ways but old school nurses usually worked the same place from start to finish. We've all heard about women getting it from washing their partners clothes but come on that's the only real answer.

It is something to shout about but nobody is shouting about it. If I get diagnosed with it is it because I have been plastering all my life or is it coz I used to wash my dads clothes?
 
As far as I'm aware it's not a certainty that exposure will cause illness or death. I think it's like smoking. If u have one cigarette in your life ur risk is minimal to none. Smoke everyday ur risk is increased but not a certainty. I think it's the same with asbestos apart from exposure at say once a month is considered dangerous. The guy today said if It was just a small bit he'd suggest glossing it and taking it out with proper ppe. But that would be for an office worker. Due to our repeated exposure the risk would be far greater
 
I agree we expose ourselves to so much dust and god knows what's in it but I think the figures should be massive for asbestosis, I have worked with some old boys who abused their bodies with the drink on top of all the dust and they lived a long life, like you say about the fags it's down to bad luck but your chances increase.
 
Yeah I agree. If u assume every trade worker was exposed daily for 20 years plus and now is exposed maybe once a week or once a month. Then assuming I takes 30-40 yrs to kill you then everyone should be dying around now
