Artex Ceilings/ Possible Asbestos

Basically over the last 15 years I’ve scraped and skimmed many textured ceilings ( as all plasters have). Mainly stuck to overboarding the last 8-9years, but still the occasional scrape job.Never thought nothing of it until recently and then just started thinking about the possible asbestos content in some of them etc. Tried reading up on it but you just get contrasting views, a lot of people say white asbestos isn’t really harmful & within artex it’s pretty much risk free, whilst others disagree. So basically was just wondering if anyone here knew more about it? And should I be worried for later on in life?
Out of the plastering game after Christmas so no need to think about how to do these ceilings in the future, just how I’ve done them in the past that’s the problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Probably will in another few years when we all start dropping like flies! Don’t worry about it if the damage is done were fooooked! :ROFLMAO:

It does worry me a little I gotta be honest, used to never wear a mask but do my best too now.. not that it'd help much as you only have to start sweeping to get the particles airborne again and breathe them in.

As far as I'm aware it's 0.1% of artex and the least harmful type.. that's what I tell myself anyway.

My first thoughts aspesdosis ,
No got checked when took ill , never wore mask , reconed the fags saved the fibres imbedding into lung tissue
It was the noise that did it lol
There's no escape , enjoy every moment mate

I wouldn't worry about it now if you being scraping the last 15 years might as well carry on. They say it takes 20 30 years for it to affect you. Do you loose your breath do you get chest pains?

Best not to stress and enjoy life mate.

If the science was solid you'd expect to see loads of trades getting lung diseases. I've applied artex with asbestos in it. 35 years later no effects.

Your rhight ther m8. I now a old lady she 81 the diagnosed asbestos on her two years ago found some asbestos on the lung she looses her breath but she still goes about. She has no idea wher this asbestos came from. Her husband was office worker so I ruled that out.. Might of picked it up wher she worked no before you ask she wasn't a plastrer

Just think about the cloud of dust we all stand in when knocking up. As soon as that powder hits the water in the bucket then we are consumed by it! Breathing gypsum dust in all day definitely ain’t any good for you.
Standing outside no good for you ither smoking to much sun not good for you to much faty food and so on. We all going to die of something one day so just enjoy life. And as I say you don't need money health is more important. Whithout health you got nothing

I think fags don't help. All those that died of lung trouble smoked.
As for asbestos I've scraped 100s of ceilings.
I think it's a low risk but who knows. Avoid the sugary and sharp looking artex as that's definitely got asbestos in it..
My understanding is..white asbestos causes emphysema. Brown and blue asbestos can be a killer.
But then smoking or poor environment ain't helping. I've just got in to spraying wood work, plus the dust sh17 in lofts and plaster dust around me. Smokers I hang around don't help plus all the traffic fumes. Traffic makes homes black and real problem especially near busy roads. All don't help lungs. I don't smoke

Working weekends is bad for your health also! ;) (y)

Thanks for all the replies, I feel a lot more reassured now. Like you’ve said, no one knows what’s round the corner.

does anyone know If asbestos insulated boards (AIB) would ever be used inside houses? I.e under staircases etc.?
don’t think I’ve ever came across any, however after reading up on stuff it got me wondering whether what I’ve believed to be chipboard, beaver board etc.could have maybe been this aib.
As you’ll probably tell I have no idea what it is/looks or feels like.

Spoke to a guy who does asbestos removal before on a job, the ones who go in with space suits etc. Long story short he told me not to worry about artex asbestos.

Think about it this way. All the millions of houses with artex. Home owners knocking holes in it, changing light fittings etc all started dropping dead.. imagine what would happen.

even if tested positive for asbestos they just say don’t mess with it. How had can it be

cough cough

Do you now what number one killer is??

I now never scrape Artex ceilings or walls just to be on the safe side, if there is Asbestos in it and you go scraping it off and the customer questions it or they know about it prior to you starting you can end up in a world of Sh××e. Either overboard it if possible or a heavy coat of Bonding first before Skimming it and charge them more. Whatever extra you charge them will be a lot less than a specialist removing it all for them.
