Advice needed with internal stone wall

Hi,
I have the inside of a stone wall to render

The wall suffers from penetrating damp. The intention is to use a lime render coat then make a stud frame sat off the wall. The original lime mortar is quite crumbly hence just want to put a coat over it.
What is the best way to apply the render? Casting or mortar mix with trowel? Any other options?

put thin sheet insulation against it stud and board and skim

brush off any loose stuff and for get it ,just maintain a slight gap for air flow
