Advice needed please

I was asked to skim a porch for a family member and when I began to sand the wall down above the door it began to break away , now there’s been an issue with a leak in the roof above which has now been repaired but my question is how would I go about repairing the hole created when hacking away the rotten wood would it be something I could fill with bonding or even mesh then a layer of bonding on top , or would new wood have to be installed

I can’t really see from the pics but is the wood taking the weight of the roof? Or is it just laths tacked onto studs to fill the void?
