Hi Guys

Just kind of nosey and thought it might be an idea to see what you guys think.
Where do you advertise and also would you use a yellow pages now or do you just google for anything your looking for ? I mean services not porn :bananas:

I have heard everyone is using the old facebook or google now, I will have the old yellow pages after me to sign up again soon so I am thinking to tell them to stick it.

Most people would look online I expect. But if yellow pages brings in work and pays for itself it's worth keeping surely. Do you get much from it?

When I first started up I had a sign written van but it just seemed to attract time wasters. Word of mouth and repeat business for me too.

Yeah I get word of mouth from old customers but I also get a bit from the yellow pages, just wondered if anyone had found facebook and google better options these days.
I kind of think the yellow pages now is a dying format really. Just wondering if I should scale it back a bit now and maybe try the facebook way as I have friends who have been getting more work from that.

Do you have a website? Twitter and Instagram are ok and free, Facebook I find is where a lot of time wasters and people look for cheap. I wouldn't touch YP apart from their free directory which I'm not sure they do in the printed version. Signed van I cheap enough but if you price other work ie building it might put some off.

I've been in yellow pages for years both online and in the book, came out the book last year and probably going to stop online this year. Any new customers I get have found me through google, you get on google free and your business will appear on the map. A website is a must in my eyes I made a very basic one through one.com it's about £15 a year but it does the job, get a decent photo gallery cos that's all people really want to see. Make sure they're your own pictures, I've had people choose me over others just because my pics were real unlike some people who have 10 bed mansions in spain on their site

Yellow pages a waste of time, keep your free listing on it wouldn't pay for it.
Google free business listing.
Not on Facebook but I know people that get a ton of work through it if you are good.funny I get work from it as my wife tells me, people recommend.
Website that I have over 3 years is well worth it.been at the stage as some other guys we're demand out strips supply for years.better the phone ringing than not.

Does anyone get work from builders through having a website? Or is it just aimed at bringing in domestic jobs? I can't see a builder looking online for a tradesman it's all reputation and word of mouth? I've looked into getting a website and I've looked at other plasterers websites as research and most of the time you can tell it's a diy job budget website and all the pictures look rubbish. A website properly designed with generic pictures looks more pleasing to the eye. Half the people haven't got a clue what they're looking at anyway? I could be wrong but that's just my thoughts.

You can spend a grand a month with some companies to have a top notch website and to rank on search engines on top results.
Builders will have connections from collage or previous employment, they ain't going to search the web for any trade I don't think, maybe on specialist trades.
Word of mouth is best, but you have to go with the flow and have a website that's the norm these days

Also to the guys that are putting pictures of their own work up, are you taking snaps off your smart phone or you got a decent camera? My iPhone camera isn't all that, I'd perhaps look at getting a better camera if I was to go down that route.

A decent smart phone will have a camera just as good as any digital camera. I don't usually get much from builders through website, I know what you mean about generic pictures looking pleasing but I personally would rather see someone's portfolio of work rather than look at a picture taking off of clipart or wherever and it seems to work for me.

word of warning if you are looking at having a website, get your pictures watermarked or have a banner, vis vest or work t shirt in the picture, anything, just to stop people stealing them.

regular occurrence for me now.

had a guy half a mile up the road take a lot off my site, i had to ring him and ask him to take them off.

had a guy join on here whose profile picture was of my work

and finally, to top it off, had a women from blackburn (I'm in south yorkshire) ring me last week telling me a lad up there has got flyers and cards with my pictures all over them and he left her living room and driveway a right mess.

my own fault, but trying to get it rectified.

I think we all know guys in different trades and I know enough that if I am stuck I can give them a ring.
My work is mainly private customers, rarely site work. I do get the feeling YP is on its way out, I think they will end up more as an online directory than a printed version.
I have chatted to people about it and facebook/google/twitter seems to be the way forward.
Great thing is they are free or cheaper than the YP's and more accessible.
It was mainly a thread to see how you guys find advertising and hopefully helps anyone thinking about it some helpful pointers.

I have noticed the guys on facebook are full of work when I was chatting to them at the merchants :frenetico:

I always think you should do as much advertising as you can the more people who know about you the more work you'll get. I don't get the people who say don't get a sign written van or don't get a website and its an on going thing. Look at coke who's not heard of them yet they spend millions a year on advertising

I was told that, more people know about you the more work you get, its just making sure you don't advertise in the wrong places where your not being seen.

I know a guy who told me you can pay so much on face book to have your advert be seen by people in your area

I just got a good sized job from an advert I put on the noticeboard in my local Wilko's....amazing the odd ones that can pay off...i didnt even know about it my mrs had put up my card when she was out shopping.

facebook is pretty s**t for most people I speak to but it provides a nice addition for social signals...

Google places is good and generally getting tonnes of content out there for your local area will help you no end :D

Haha well I aint in the funny handshake gang so word of mouth would not keep me going lol, but any tips or trick to help in getting more work or getting your name out there is always good (y)
