Hey all i want to know what you all think, my oldman told me when your are replastering a old house you should use what he called 50/50 witch was a quater bag of bonding and a full bag of skim let that go tacky then trowel it in with water then 1 coad of just skim over that 5 mins later and then trowel it as usal. I have been doing this for the last 16 years on every privite job that just needs reskimmed is it overkill or should i just be skimming over the oldplaster if its sound.

if it works why not...

A lot of us on here do a "zombie" mix which is a couple of handfulls of bonding in finish on the first coat :D

Seems good practice to me, will certainly be a stronger finish with the bonding in it.

If the walls aren’t bad then I wouldn’t be adding 50% bonding tho that would hang like f**k.

house im doing now the walls are shite . Alot back to brick, others will be meshed and bonding/skim mix

Any pictures of the finish?

Worked well in the days of jute scrim , only necessary if walls are rough though, as said , we would use only 2/3 handfuls of bonding in the first coat

How will having Bonding in it make it a "stronger finish", what with Bonding being less dense (lightweight plaster)?

because bondings stronger than skim and has aggregate in it. Same way durafinish works. I’ve used bonding or bonding + skim over areas where skim alone would crack, and it’s not cracked even years after.

could be wrong but from my experience it’s definitely stronger than just skim alone

I will say that bonding in finish will only help with thickness and not in strength . How do you know that areas that you have gone over with bonding/skim mix did not crack as if you had gone over with just skim they would have ?. If you were adding or not adding fibers to finish you may have a point but just bonding ......no sorry.

own house for one around wooden windows. A guy posted years back on here and everyone said it will crack, i had pics from the renovation and current, never cracked.

cant be arsed to debate about plaster lol. I said I could be wrong. But I’m pretty sure bonding mix is stronger than just skim alone.

What is the aggregate in Bonding then mate, is it something stronger than gypsum?

I have found that bonding in the first coat on s**t walls seems to prevent hairline cracks though I would never tell someone that’s 100%. I rarely do that though. Now and then.

If you need it though it prob means it would be better to bring the old stuff down anyway

It s**t.. makes it hang for f**k**g ages. Worked with some kids other week . We fired f**k**g loads on and could of gone for breakfast. But had to be on our toes once we just ust finish for second coat

i am sure it is Perlite. it is mined in South Africa, which was controlled by the Richardson brothers who were London gangsters in the 60s
