Hi all. I've been plastering for probably over 5 years, Did just over a year of an apprenticeship but the builder i was with was not giving me the variaty needed for my portfolio and was getting me to do matainence work on his properties. So my citb officer sugested i find someelse to take me on to do my second year. A plastering firm aggreed to take me on so i left my previous employer. But then failed to enrole me for second year. Me being young at the time got fed up and gave up so just started doing mostly domestic jobs with a few site jobs. I,m just booking in for a cscs test but am not qualified. Does anyone know the best way to get a recognised qualification and is it worth it. I.m kicking myself not finishing it when i was 17. I,ve found on tinternet diamond training down near portsmouth (live on isle of wight) but lack evidence for 2 day nvq2

every trade is about confidence, if youv got that and you know you can leave a good job and give customers value 4 money and peace of mind when you leave a jobthen thats all you need, you can either do it or you cant

Contact the Cskills (changed their name now) and or your local college and they should put you in touch with the nearest traing organisation that will sort you out with your NVQ 2 OSAT mate. Get your quals mate, TBH I don't know anybody who regrets getting them but I know loads who regret not getting them.

Being able to do the job or not in the 1st place will not get you on sites that want the proof before they let you on, or will prove to a domestic customer that you can do the job. Not going to lie to you, but the truth is that I've only ever been asked to show my quals on a couple of domestics but it got me the job when I was asked.

i`ve been a plasterer for 18 yrs.done my nvq last year.when the nvq bloke turned up to`assess me`,he said ok this should only take an hour.hold your straight edge against some plasterboard, right that`s the drylinning done.hold your skimming trowel against that wall, thats that done.and so on.
it`s a joke.
most of my work is site work and i`ve never been asked to show it.it`s all about making money.when my card needs upgrading in a few years they can get f**ked

i just use the cscs basic gard at mo and seems to be getting me onsite. your right bobby, its a joke but we have to accept thats the way its going. every site since xmas has required my card details never questioned that its only a basic card. what i want to know is how the eu's are getting onsite, they aint done any nvq's

probably the same as you they have a basic card, you are an eu yourself.

Cheers guys. Pretty much what i thought. I'm confident at the job and always do a good job. Would like to get a bit more experianced with the external side as seem to mostly do internal works. Been getting in with a few companies lately but need my cscs card which got me worried. I'm fairly clued up with theory side as the first year at college was to get all that out of the way. Problem is i don't really know any other plasterers so haven't really had the chance to pick this side up. I can render and get a good finish but only ever done small jobs. Just been asked to put in a price two gable ends on a house and a couple of smallish walls. Some quion work and window ceals are angled thermalites, so lots of windows and beading up to do. Don't know if i could do the bigger areas with just me and lab, especially as now getting warmer and on thermalites. been built for a while. So thinking good soak and waterproofer in scratch to hold off top coat??

if you can do the job then an assessor will come on site and sign you off but it will cost between 500 and 700.

Cheers grandwizard, I'l have a look now at that freeflow additive! Plasterjfe.. you know where i could get in contact with an accessor? Thanks for all the replies fellas!

Hello Mate
Im after getting NVQ 2 simply as I want NVQ 3 and you need 2 first, spoke to a guy this week who runs Able Skills and through them you do the experienced worker assessment which takes a day and a half and costs £40 and for that you get NVQ 2 and a CSCS card, which I think is pretty good
