Does Being Qualified Make You A Good Plasterer

It don't make you a better plasterer, but blokes that hav'nt been to collage miss out on some of the theory.

re - rendering old farm house

Depends how hard the stone, etc is, its not a good idea to put hard render on soft stone or brick or a substrate that needs to breath, but also consider that the softer the render is the quicker it will weather.

Why is plaster expanding when drying?

Can't you sand it back to give a flat finish?

To SBR or not to SBR,That is the question..

How come it dint work Bod, were the bricks porous or leaky gutter/fall pipe or something?
  11. R

    Painters!!!!!

There should be no need for any sanding or filling:huh:, what lights are you using?
  12. R

To SBR or not to SBR,That is the question..

Unless the wall is soaked your waisting time and money using sbr, if you realy need too give it a coat of sand and cement with an integral waterproofer, then dab it with thermaline boards, you'll only need to use mechanical fixings in area's where, in the event of a fire heat could blow the...

    pva with added cement

  19. R

    s*p*r*lex and refina

I just can't help thinkin that these plastic tools are owt but gimicky type shite :RpS_confused:.
  20. R

    pva with added cement

No PVA's will break under damp freezing conditions (which is why the are shagged) use SBR with neat cement mixed up like emulsion paint and render onto this whilst wet. Get a Turks head brush from you merchant they're the best for slappin it on. :RpS_thumbup:
  21. R

skimming onto dry PVA - will the plaster blow ?

PVA, sealer and adhesive, 1st coat seals to control suction, 2nd coat bonds the finish to the sealed substrate, skimming on dry PVA's like skimming on glass.
  22. R

Plaster on top of artex is coming off the walls help and advice please

(If), from what I'm looking at in your photo is the bonding plaster on top of your artex I would say its his fault because it looks like there's no mechanical key, if its the bonding coat underneath your artex and the original finishing plaster has "blown" then its not his fault but the bloke...

Dot and screed, am I the only one?

Depends if your left or right handed, i'm keggy handed so skim right to left I should rough on left to right but don't, the latter being it does not matter if you leave lines with the heel of your trowel on backing plaster cos you rule em out, where on finish it does.
  24. R

Dot and screed, am I the only one?

Bang a load on rule off level as you go, fill out any hollows, rule off, piece o pi55, the bonus system put an end to dot an screed. Imagine using the dot an screed system with a one coat plastering machine, :RpS_scared:

I love two coat, that new hardwall formula is great for ploughing on, the other stuff was like spreading chewing gum but still much better than bonding coat, I cant see this making a massive comeback tho, wheres the labour to do it, eastern Europe?

    External wall HELP!

Are you asking this because the house is rendered already! your existing window frames are not designed to take the weight of render, so they need to be removed a new frame of something like 3x2 timber, WPB ply, building paper then expanded metal lath to render onto. Insulate the cavity block up...

    cracked thermalites

Your bedroom floor joists sit on the internal wall and if there are no wall ties between inner and outer skin of brick you may well have movement on the inside but no evidence of it on the outside, :flapper:
  41. R

    Vaulted ceiling, loft conversion

Just bear in mind some of your angles may open up when the roof timbers dry out and settle in!
  42. R

    cracked thermalites

No but by the sound of things there's movement in the thermalites, you need to address this first or it will always crack, has the plaster blown from above/below the crack or is it bonded to the blocks, if its bonded you have movement, subsidence, if it sounds hollow between the plaster and the...
