Plasterer 'hanged himself live in chatroom' on Christmas morning

Completely horrific for the family. Modern life seems to create pressures that make people do the unthinkable. Keep an eye out on your closest everyone.

    Small time VS Big time

Also I suppose it depends on how much extra you wanna make, I'm sure we all have different opinions on what is worth it and what isn't.
  4. D

    Small time VS Big time

Exactly mate, much easier to run a few gangs when on sitework. But you'd still have to have a dedicated team of lads.
  5. D

    Small time VS Big time

was that on New builds Andy? I'm glad you did well. There will be reliable good quality lads out there who are happy to sub. Not many though.
  6. D

    Small time VS Big time

Haha, yeah well my 2 gang is me and my brother (older) and I always revert to the clean up as that was the first thing he ever taught me to do! He still trowels up like a monster and enjoys it!

    Small time VS Big time

Great thread lads, makes me not feel like we're the only ones . We are a 2 gang, been going 20 years , we used to sub out full houses and made so little it wasn't worth it, plus the hassle. Someone once told me that you won't make anything substantial with between 4-6 subbies because you'll...

    Got these swirls artex ceilings

Tell em your overboarding it or walking away. I've skimmed plenty of them and they take forever to trowel up and every time I regret it. Takes 3 hours to go off added to your prep time , you could've boarded it by then. All to save the customer a few quid on boards.

    Poor Plasterers

All out abuse on Vince again. Oh dear. Anyway, going back to the point , I keep my pricing simple as soon as it tips into the next pound, £6.20 for example it becomes £7 in my quote. Same for boards. I always charge £10 for PVA , although when doing single rooms a 5ltr tub ceili normally does 3...

It's all ready to board n skim

There's loads of these clowns doing projects again now, just like pre recession. I'm glad you haven't priced it. Do a good days graft, even though that may mean moving stuff about half the day and get off home. Take the money and run.
  11. D

    Is this to be expected?

Yep as above, get some paint on. When over skimming artex your at the mercy of where the plasterboard sags or a joist is lower therefore the skim will be a lot thinner there. This is the reason you can see the pattern still.

    Beads

Good idea too, I've just scrimmed 2 ceilings, no staples, no PVA, see how it does for Monday morning!!!' Euroscrim

    Problems with customers prep

I get so pissed off when a customer says they will prep. I say that I'll give you 2 prices , one with me doing everything and a heavily weighted price with me just skimming. I am sick of s**t prep. I followed a lot of bad prep when the recession was on because we needed the work but that's...

    Beads

Sorry , I rated funny, then thought it through. You have a good point. I prefer to swear a lot the next morning when scrim falls off.
  15. D

    Beads

Clout nail on plasterboard, as long as I've dabbed the boards I'll know there's plenty of dabs where nail goes. Stick with finish on reskims. Hook on beads get on my tits, use way too much finish to cover. A stapler to me is another tool to carry and cover in s**t and break.

    Gyproc FibaTape Perfect Finish

What Purpose does that serve ? Surely scrim is scrim? Is it supposed to be stronger?

    Uni failure

Jesus Christ, don't check the forum for a while and come back and everyone is scrapping over uni again lol f**k it I'm off to work to skim over PVAd walls, leave you to it!

    The worlds gone mad

Oh dear, hopefully you didn't want it anyway. When you go to parents evening you can laugh at the walls. How much was materials? Using hardball?

    Speedskim experts help please?!

    Didn't take offence, I just didn't understand that's all

    Speedskim experts help please?!

Not doubting you, but as fast as anyone is with a trowel on the pics you sent would be quicker with the st 600. We've a reputation for being quick but it's no good when you're mangling your body to do it.

    Speedskim experts help please?!

I know mate, nightmare but I've put myself under pressure by guaranteeing jobs be complete by end of month. Empty houses no customers in the way that's the good side. First 7 dayer I've done since about May

    Speedskim experts help please?!

Yep I'm hoping that , had more energy at end of day. Even nipped to merchants and fetched gear and loaded my job out for the weekend !
  23. D

    Speedskim experts help please?!

Totally buzzing today after using the st 600. Used it in place of first 2 trowels then finish with 2 on my MT. think I've got the knack, so easy ! Thanks for the help lads.
  24. D

    Speedskim experts help please?!

Sounds good! That's what I'm aiming for. Do you do this on domestics? I'm aware that the speedskim is not ideal on kitchen walls for example where sometimes there's 6 or more sockets on a wall or do you still use it?
  25. D

    Speedskim experts help please?!

So no matter how wet it is through those early stages ? 1st coat / flatten 2nd coat / flatten Then some time to wait and prep elsewhere etc,
  26. D

    Speedskim experts help please?!

Ok , so I took the plunge and invested in the st and sf 600 and st 1200. I'm starting to try and master the st 600 first. Are we saying that flatten in first coat immediately no matter how wet it is? And then apply 2nd coat immediately? And then flatten with st immediately again ? This is all...

    Multi

I switch between Mulit and Board finish. They both turn wank in certain batches, so as multi starts to behave s**t I switch to multi and vice versa. Must say I've been on multi a while, but very soon it'll turn s**t so I'll switch to board. Board finish years ago was far superior to nowadays ...

    Priorities.

Yes customers really piss me off when put unrealistic time demands on us. The Kitchen fitter is coming on. ... The tiler is booked for ... Followed by the windows won't be in till... The electrician can't first fix till... Leaving us a few days to plaster in between all the 'important trades'

    Unifinish

What's the record for replies to a thread? If anything has been achieved front the thread it's that Unifinish is splitting opinion and highly controversial! Danny could block the word out like when some c**t swears

    People are melters.

Oldest trick in the book Jess. If I think I'm getting future work I might price higher than normal because I don't wanna get stuck on same standard prices long term. 1 2 and 3 day jobs generally pay much better for me
  31. D

    Unifinish

Lol, touchy subject. I'll leave it and look around

So the BGS group is like a VIP area here?

    Is there BGS thread ?

    I'm outta here ! 2 disagree ratings !

    Unifinish

I'm saying that I'd be waiting around a long time for PVA to dry and then it'd be a 3hour gauging.
  38. D

    Unifinish

Sound, about a bag and a half? Good going timewise. Hopefully you are charging good money, as going back through the years whenever something comes out to help our trade (mixing drill , collated screwgun, ...) it makes rates come down.
  39. D

    Unifinish

I'm not saying I would use it. I'm saying that if there was a case for using it, then that's it. Say on a cold morning, no heating in that room, I know that on that surface the PVA would take an eternity to tack up, or fully dry as I prefer. You end up going on too wet and the finish slides...
  40. D

    Unifinish

Right vince, if ever there was a case for using uni, then that's it. We all know how long pva would take dry in on that surface, horrific artex and horrific paint. How did it go? How long from mix to final trowel?

Cement board and dot and dab for stove fireplace recess lining

I've always been told to use glassroc board 15mm and plenty of driwall adhesive

This is crazy, I'm by no means a regular here but I've observed here for years. Why would Danny say he's seen the email when he hasn't ? It wouldn't make sense . What does Danny gain? So much good to read on here but like a car crash I can't help reading this thread! Lol. Move on boys I think
  43. D

    Unifinish

Had a horrible gauging today. skimmed ceiling with multi onto board , like a dream, 2 1/2 bags slopes and curves, lovely. Then we hit the PVA,d walls, PVA fully dry as I like it. Greasy , bubbling, stretch marks , looked pretty horrific after 2 trowels. But experience told me to leave and then...

    Unifinish

Ha! Yeah I liked the writing on the old van. If you seen in your rear view mirror it was scary! you've done a good job on your rendering a few years back. Was it sand and cement or OCR?
  45. D

    Unifinish

Yeah that's my work base . I live up the road from you though.
  46. D

    Unifinish

Lol! I won't be using it ever then as in my head this would be it's safe zone
  47. D

    Unifinish

I know Vince indirectly and as far as I can tell he's building his name and reputation through industry suppliers, the slick van, fancy website, twitter and so on. No harm in that. I'm old skool and word of mouth still carries a lot of weight. The gaffer at my merchants gave me the jewsons...

    Unifinish

Overboard on artex unless you know it's been artexed direct onto plasterboard. Newish sites that all had artex as standard for example . Skimming over artex with PVA or UNI is gonna be a risk if the artex was applied over existing plaster. PVA and skim walls. Forget unifinish and like someone...
