    Powerfloat/sponge

I've just bought myself a new toy hoping to save some aching shoulders & elbows! My question is & I know I'm going to get ripped for asking but I'm going to ask anyway.... At what stage do you use the sponge & what sponge for what product? I've tried it today on some OCR with the far left hand...

    Compressor and Gun for Tyrolean

I am so going to go down this route, too old to use the tyrolean gun now. Just one silly question though, I've always used the bagged cullomix for a tyrolean finish & washed/sharp sand for a heavier finish (roughcast) what are you guys using with this hopper, normal building sand?

    Faster? Machine or Hand

Why's that Clemo? I'm seriously thinking about taking the plunge into the machine world, been surfing & lurking for ages listening to everyone's opinion & still non the wiser really? Are they a bitch to use with skim then & do you need different lances for different gear etc?

    Triathlons

I did the three peaks challenge a few years ago with absolutely no training whatsoever!! I ran down Ben Nevis & fooked my knees & both my big toe nails dropped off!! Won't be doing that again soon. I'm looking into doing JOGLE or LEJOG in a couple of years time as a 50th birthday treat, how long...

    Triathlons

Can't believe its been 5yrs since I last came on here?! Triathletes are normal people ta :bananahappy: I did the Peak district Tri in July & the swim was in the river Derwent right outside Chatsworth House, well that was the coldest water I've ever swam in!! Nearly put me off doing anymore...

    Triathlons

I only started swimming/triathlons 3 years ago & I just seem to be stuck at my level now & just can't get any faster!! I always blame my job though as when I'm swimming in the evening I'm already knackered its the same when I've got my morning session too.

    Triathlons

Hi y'all, its been 5 years since I was last on here! Just wondering if any of you lot participate in Triathlons or swimming? If so how do you find the swimming on your shoulders/arms, mine always feels fatigued before I start?

whats the best plastering tip/advice youve been giving

If you have to take a radiator off with TRV's put a 5pence piece in the bottom of the valve. When you then screw the valve down it does shut the water off! I've had too many that still leak even when shut fully off (past the frost setting) in the past.

on a 100 pound day rate?

I agree with you there matey, apart from licking dustbins that is, lids maybe but not the full bin!! :RpS_wink: I totally agree with you as far as the media are concerned though, like you say, the more they go on about it the more people think it so! Trouble is, with everyone this is, wages are...

This is correct. I hate laying in with the same stuff!!

    Web site

Thanks lads. I'll have to seriously consider getting myself a website then!!! What sort of prices are we looking at; obviously one to set one up & then I presume there is a running cost involved too?
  19. J

    Web site

This is probably more aimed at Danny but how many of you advertise via a web site & do you get many jobs through it or rather do you get many leads through it? I get the vast majority (95%) of my work via word of mouth & probably 5% via the Thompson Local but have been thinking of advertising...

    work lights?????????

I have bought a couple of these; Defender They are brilliant & definitely worth the money!! You need to get a light that has a triphosphorus bulb as that gives off an almost daylight light, if you know what I mean? :RpS_thumbup: Oh also available in 110v for you site workers!!

    Plastering and pva

Same here Danny. Thats what I was taught many moons ago!!!!
  22. J

Might be of interest to some !

I had tennis elbow in my (skimming) right arm a few years back, I went to the doctors & after many pain killers & anti-inflammatorys he gave me acupuncture (western) (more on that later) well bugger me it worked!! Fast forward a few years.. 2 years ago my bloody left elbow (hawk arm) started to...

    hello

I'm in Breaston matey.. So half way between Derby & Notts!!
  24. J

    hello

Hi matey!! Where in Derby are you from?
  25. J

    Squirrel

Yeah I know what you're saying. I would like to think that if I used a tall bucket instead of the yellow ones for my cleaning I could just whisk it in that straight after a mix & that should clean it? Who knows eh?
  26. J

    Squirrel

Has anyone used one of these before & if so what are they like? Looks quite a good idea really but if anyone has used it & found they were shite I wont bother with one!! 10 Gallon SQUIRREL MIXER - Paint, Plaster, Enamels, etc on eBay (end time 08-Dec-10 12:40:52 GMT)
  27. J

    Slow setting bonding

Yep I agree Spoons a handful or two of cement always quickens setting time with bonding!! :RpS_thumbup: So you can still pva!!!
  28. J

    Glass fibre

Is it proven to prevent cracking or is it only a suggestion? I would have thought that the fibers would make the finish a little tougher, so in that sense it seems plausible?
  29. J

    Just One Day

Well bugger me. I've just got home & the fella's been round & coughed up the lot! :-0 He's CID but is a nice chap though!! Especially more so now!! Thankfully I don't need to grow a pair now!!! :RpS_thumbup:
  30. J

    Have i been taught right?

Same here matey!! I hate it when I'm working with my mate as he always wants to lay in with the same mix!!! I prefere to mix another smaller batch to lay in with!! Again personal preference I suppose?

Makita Autofeed Screw Gun 240 or 110?

I was told by a sparky that as long as its got rcd protection its good enough!! I guess he was pulling my pisser then?:RpS_cursing: I would have thought that having a rcd is a better protection that 110?
  32. J

    Glass fibre

I've never heard of it in skim!! Did you not see any fibres at all then matey? I would have thought that some would trowell through at some stage?
  33. J

    Plaster shelling off....

I always wait til my pva is dry before I skim!! Its what I was taught & I dont have too many problems!:RpS_thumbup:
  34. J

Makita Autofeed Screw Gun 240 or 110?

Can you not use 240 on site if you've got rcd protection?
  35. J

    Just One Day

I've had a drag off it but its paid materials & other plasterer!! So I've not dragged any wages from it yet :-( I suppose I ought to grow a pair & ask for more???
  36. J

    Plastic Population

That's a pretty fair question in my eyes! Does anyone have an answer?
  37. J

    Just One Day

Bloody hell this weather.. I've only got one day left to finish a rough casting job!! Will it warm up enough before new year to put a rough cast coat on over shitty pebble dash that's been scraped back? I could do with some dollar from it!!
  38. J

    Beads

I've used those minimesh beads from B&Q before & thought they were shite!! But I didn't know they did a wider version though?
  39. J

    Plastic Population

Right then I really want to take the plunge with a plastic fantastic!! I currently use a 14" marshalltown, what size plastic would you recommend I go for? 16" or 18" perhaps?
  40. J

    Plastic Population

Ahh that's another point Layiton matey, if your wall isn't flat to start with does the flexibility of the plastic trowell leave the humps & hollows? Can you polish with them?
  41. J

    Plastic Population

Do you know I might just do that!! The worst that can happen is I have to pva & reskim it I suppose!! Is it a case of the bigger the trowell the better or do you go with the same size as you've already got?
  42. J

    Plastic Population

Right then I am fairly open minded & willing to try new & different things (enter your own pun:rolleyes)) I admit I had never heard of plastic trowells until very recently & I am now toying with idea of buying one of these plastic trowells & giving it a try?? What I dont want though is for me to...

  47. J

    drilling into artex any ideas?

your right with the large cornice though ----have bonded and skimmed some of those---were 10ft high as well--- Ha ha they are always 10ft high!!!! I've got three rooms to this next week as it happens exactly that !!
  48. J

    drilling into artex any ideas?

I hear what you are saying matey but if there is coving up especially the ornate stuff you just cannot overboard!! I know its a bit of a piss about but like I said in an earlier post I now pva (watery) the artex then scrape, then pva proper. Seems ok so far! Admittedly only done about 3 or so...
  49. J

    drilling into artex any ideas?

A fair few months now bubbles mate. I just got sick of my skim peeling off the artex on 2nd trowell. Thing is when a 'blister' appears or it pulls off a little I end up scrapeing it back & before you know it ths whole ceiling as come down without too much effort but obviously loads of mess!! So...
