Thanks all, never used board finish so didn't know how it compared to multi. Been given a half tub of leftover blue grit so thought it might help but if PVA will do at least that dries clear if I splash it on the woodwork.
Dare I ask @TheWand what's Micro?
Sorry in advance if this is a daft question, can't get multifinish but have some board finish, is it possible to use board finish to reskim over existing plaster if it's been primed with blue grit or will the suction still be too high for it? Bad idea?
Small amount of BG board finish left in B & Q Kidderminster this morning @Kinkyboy if it's any good to you, only about 10 bags tho but showing over 100 so they may have a pallet in the back maybe.
Please don't blame DIY'ers for this, I've been happily waiting for a few months now for multi as I'm well aware it's not my livelihood . There is no way I'm putting money in the pockets of profiteers reselling marked up, I'll wait as long as it takes to get it at standard price. To give Travis...
What about a rebate scheme on the empty bags, get outlets to charge £25 a bag then rebate £18 credit on return of empty bags with invoice? Would keep DIY'ers like me able to get the couple of bags I need but hopefully put off the hoarders and profiteers trying to resell it. Higher outlay on...
Fair point, guess I'll only know how I get on if I try it. Was more concerned if it had got crushed in transit but that would probably take some doing as it looks sturdy. Using a MT 11 x 4.5" SS before that came with pre ground edges and rivets and has a tiny curve and only lifts a little at...
Ah, yeah a bit worried this was a waste of money, they're not cheap and don't see how it can get a flat finish with such a bow in it, doesn't make sense.
Hi all, sorry if it's a dumb question but is it normal for a Marshalltown trowel (not a flexi) to be curved across its length from new? I know they are 'broken in' so expected a curve across its width but against a straight edge the heel and toe are lifting about 2mm up. I guess it will stop...
Finally got round to topcoat this week but sadly got a few star shaped cracks appear at the top of the wall. It’s next to a boiler I switched off and left off but may have still been warm I guess. Going over a thin S+C backing on red brick. I gave it several weak coats of PVA the night...
Finally got hold of some plastering sand and tried a S+C backing yesterday, good experience but I'll admit it's a whole different animal and I struggled with getting on the wall, no problems getting it on the floor though.
Can I skim it today or is it better to allow it to dry out fully incase...
So, in the end I grabbed a bag from B&Q two weeks past date and got a discount, thought better than the months old stuff I had. Working time in the bucket seemed reasonable but even with a spray down first doing a small patch on a south facing wall on a sunny bank holiday weekend was a...
Queued for B&Q today as showing stock of hardwall online, arrive to find it's all past date, some by 2 weeks, some by 2 months! All on the same pallet so probably been hanging around and restacked. No plastering sand either. Better luck next time I guess.
Hi all, hope you’re keeping well. I have a small (less than 1m2) back to brick to patch but run out of hardwall. Checked wickes website Monday and thought supply was back to normal but oh no it’s all gone now. So question is is it worth a punt with some out of date stuff I have or do bad...
Don’t know if our experience helps but we found unblocking chimney vents, clearing material around perimeter of house bridging the damp proof course, replacing leaking water supply pipe and repairing blocked and damaged gully’s, drains and rainwater goods, venting kitchen and bathroom with...
I’m not a tradesman, but have had more experience than I’d like with damp. We had mould round the top of the outside walls in the main bedroom. Cleaned it off with mild bleach and unblocked the chimney to let the air circulate in the room again. Mould never returned after that.
Plaster drying out nicely btw and no cracks this time. Finish not as nice as first time around but I’m not gonna push my luck with a third attempt, I reckon it’ll do.
Gotta ask, the tape, how do you say it proper, is it like Tay-pit, tap-it or tar-pit?
I reckon it’ll be more successful than...
This stuff looks a lot less painful than the methods I tried. Holding a 1” galvanised nail and the conduit and repeatedly hitting my thumb till I thought to hold the nail with pliers and punch the hole first, conduit still fell off. Then holding it for half an hour (with sore thumb) hoping no...
Well I’m no expert but sounds like a good idea, I’ve never tried to fix beads up as a diyer but have tried nailing in to masonry and it’s never worked well for me. Same for trying to tack conduit in place for cabling, maybe this tape could help with that too.
Best of luck with it!
Hmmm, can’t get the link to work but getting the idea, can’t be any less sticky than this orange scrim tape surely, I couldn’t get that to stick without a lot of grief.
Thanks bof, yes PVA was cheaper Wickes stuff, mix looked thinner than skimmed milk so yeah I’ll mix a lot stronger if I ever try this again. Used same bag of plaster, in date and under cover outside but been open a few weeks now so maybe it’s got a bit damp in storage too. I left it a bit long...
Well, update for anyone who’s interested, decided the only way to learn is to persevere and have another ‘crack’ at it. Rubbed it down a bit with some medium grit paper & wiped off the dust. Put some orange scrim tape over it cus orange is a stronger colour than blue apparently, still found it...
Found a pic of the hardwall base coat, can just about see the timber frame on the bottom right hand side where the scratching stops. And that’s where the crack is too...
Lol, yeah that was in the house when we moved in (like 10 years ago) and we’ve never got round to changing it. One of the knobs does nothing so no idea why it’s a double!!?
Thanks all. Yeah there was wood on the right hand side packing the frame out aswell. Good point on the old brickwork sucking it in, especially being half bricks bet that makes it worse too on the unfired broken ends.
Maybe I should’ve hacked a bit more brick and stuck some plasterboard in...
Took me ages to do for such a small area mind! Plus it was about 7” wide and smallest midget trowel was 8” I think, so got cheapest one I could find in wickes and had to chop it down (yeah that was harder that I thought it would be) then emery the face and edges. Mind you looks like I might...
I’m thinking a smear of decorators caulk might be worth a try before getting on the trowel again. Save me having to clean plaster from next doors TV aerial or wherever else it ends up when it’s supposed to be going on the wall...
The top half where the cabling conduit is seems ok with no cracks (so far!). Crack has appeared from dimmer switch down to the floor on the right hand side.
Maybe I was chancing my luck with the depth of hardwall (probably over an inch in places). Possibly sand/cement would have been better...
Sorry they’re not the best photos! Yeah there is a timber frame behind where it cracked, around the door. Looked like some 2” thick timber inside the door lining.
To be honest multifinish may have been way too thick on that side too as I was trying to bring it out a bit to the architrave...
Hello all, I’m a newbie here, not a plasterer just a DIY’er. Had a go at plastering a small section between two doors at the weekend. Originally took it back to brick but found bricks behind had been hacked and very uneven. Too many high spots so couldn’t board over so tried to flatten as...
