Before - botch job - fixed - final result.
Spoke to the original “plasterer” today and he was honest enough say he made a mistake and didn’t want payment. So overall it’s worked out ok.
Given the state the other guys left the ceiling in, this is obviously a compromise, rather than taking the whole thing down. I think the ceiling looks great personally so it’s a good job I’m the one living with it and not you then.
Would you prefer a client that told you what they wanted or one...
Talking about painted work. Here’s a few pics of the ceiling in the hallway where they did remove the paper. Decorator spent half a day trying to correct it.
Been recommended Easi Filler as it can be sanded very thin. Any other thoughts?
My plumber told me a horry story where he was knocked for £3k by someone who paid the deposit, but when he finished, they told him they didn’t have the money to pay him. Apparently there are people out there who just do this as a matter of course.
I’m not one of those. In fact I tipped the guys...
Just for clarity. The decorator recommended a “plasterer” he knew called Dave (not his real name). I organised the job with Dave. Dave didn’t turn up on the day he said and txt me 30 minutes before he was meant to arrive saying his workmate was still on holiday, but he could make it the next...
Decorator will prime it with this http://www.zinsseruk.com/product/gardz/
With regards to paying the other plasterer, considering it’s now cost me more than he was charging me, to correct his botch, I was going to offer to pay for his materials and travel costs as a gesture of goodwill. He...
Here’s the finished result. I went for an overboard in the end to simplify the job and reduce the mess and really happy with the end result!
The guys that did it were in a different league that the jokers that did the botch job. Seeing these guys in action made me realise the others couldn’t...
The building management firm have had an extensive asbestos survey of the building and sent me the report. Also they confirmed it’s the same material across all the ceilings and there is 100% no asbestos in the ceilings.
Got a quote of £2k to take it down and re-board and skim it! Looks like...
Firstly it’s from the 30’s. Received the building asbestos survey today and have had it confirmed there is 100% no asbestos in the ceilings. Only places in the building are behind a few fuse boxes.
This is what I’ve been told.
“Koi insulated plasterboard - reasonably common before the polystyrene and polyurethane backed plasterboard became the norm for integrated insulated plasterboard.
No asbestos --- just koi, coconut fibres, hessian, hemp, or some other natural materials.
I wish more...
You should wear a mask nowadays for any building dust, there’s no excuse anymore about not understanding the risks. MDF might prove to be worse than asbestos in the long run, yet idiots still cut it in a house with no mask or dust protection. Wood dust causes nose and throat cancer. God knows...
I said it was plaster board, which it is, and not lath&plaster as many told me it would be. It’s just pre-insulated plasterboard so you don’t need any insulation in the cavity. You can see the white layer before the first skim which is the plaster board part. Much lighter than plaster board and...
Just cut a hole in the the ceiling to confirm 100% what it is. Never seen this before. It’s very light and soft. Looks like it’s made of wood fibres. 15mm thick. Must be original as it runs in to the coving.
Anyone know what it is? Should I get it tested?
Thanks
I can say from a customers point of view, skimming over paper is great! Telling my plasterers who insisted they needed to take it off, to “shut the f*ck up and just skim the bloody thing you dumb c*nts”, not only saved me a bunch of money and time, but gave me a quality finish I imagine you just...
Guys, I just want to say thanks for the input you’ve given. I’ve learnt a lot about plastering in the past few days and won’t let anyone try to mug me off like this again.
I feel a little sorry for your trade though. It clearly takes years to get the skills and experience to be a quality...
As others have said, it’s not about the finish, which is still poor. To say they couldn’t get the paper off a previously plastered ceiling, when the didn’t even bother to turn their steamer on and they managed to strip the paper in the hallway which was the exact same stuff, done at the same...
Here’s a few mor pics including what the paper was, which they did remove from the hall.
I think a bead 1nich off the edge of the coving and overboard is the cleanest, quickest and easiest way. So annoyed these T***s have ruined the ceiling though. If they told me they needed an extra day, I...
One last question. How about cutting the board out to the nearest joist so that the plaster cove remains supported and then re-board it to there? I get the stop bead but might look naff given the cove probably isn’t perfectly straight and a stop bead would only expose this.
A couple of plasterers I’ve spoken ken to have said they are surprised it didn’t fall when the we’re doing it and as it didn’t, it may well stay attached. Is this true?
This was meant to be a small fix, and has turned in to s nightmare. My wife even said we didn’t need it done, but I thought...
Can someone offer some advice.
The ceiling is plaster board.
The cove is in situ plasterwork that’s worth keeping.
The ceiling has been skimmed over paper without my consent and to a poor standard.
What would you do if it was your property?
Thanks.
Do you think the paper could still be removed? I’ve spoken to several plasterers today about scrapping the plaster off and starting again. None of them have been clear if this is possible, but I’m wondering if it’s more to do with them not wanting to do it. If it’s possible though, I would do it...
Ok, the way he can rectify it is to take the ceiling down and replace it and the plaster work to original standard, as he’s now made it impossible to do the job properly.
The reality is the best he can offer to do is make his botch job a slightly neater botch job. What good is that to me and...
Lodan, I’d appreciate it if you would go and spread you drivel on another thread. All I’ve heard from you is it’s acceptable to expect to sand a ceiling after a fresh skim, I told them to botch the job, I’ve joined a forum to get support from random people not to pay a bill and a piece of 90...
I don’t know what it’s called but it’s the original plaster from when it was built in 1932. According to Lodan though it’s standard stuff you can get at B&Q.
It would be a shame to get rid of an original feature like that, which is why it pisses me off so much that they’ve made it impossible...
I can assure you I’m not a troll. I came on here hoping to find genuine advice.
I did think £640 for two guys for one day was a lot of money, but as he was a recommendation and I wanted a good job done, I didn’t really care.
As for telling them to plaster over the paper, as I’ve said...
You’re an absolute tool!
I think I’ve made it clear I wasn’t consulted. Boarding too expensive.... I’ve just spent £20k doing the flat up, I don’t think a £6 sheet of plaster board is going to make me tell a plasterer to botch the job.
I paid the plasterer who is part of the Master Craftsman Guild, £40 to assess whether the ceiling was going to fall down and what my option were. At the time it had only been on for 18hours and my hope was it could be stripped off then while semi wet. I’m about the have a £7k floor laid and the...
I’ll get the other company in to fix the finish and will debut that cost from what the original plasterer is owed. He’s offered to fix it but I’ve told him I’m more comfortable with someone else doing it and he understands. I’m not looking to screw anyone over and believe I’m being fair in that...
Do people really believe this acceptable workmanship? When I was a carpenter, if I hung a door that didn’t shut, I wouldn’t tell the customer to just sand it down. Is this acceptable in the plastering trade?
Firstly they did skim on the paper without telling me.
I couldn’t care less about the £600, I would much rather it was done properly. Here’s the report from the survey I had done.
“please see below finding from your enquiry and my visit to your property today to survey plastering work...
26sq m in 20 minutes! It’s not only sanding it would need, it needs filling too.
No I don’t know what I want to do, I just wish it was done properly the first time and I wouldn’t be having all this stress of trying to get someone else’s terrible work fixed. Ive just spent £20k on a new heating...
Yeah that’s exactly what I want... a wavy ceiling that might fall down for free!
They took the paper off the hallway and plastered that. The next time I saw them they were plastering over the paper in the living room. I asked them why they were, and they told me they couldn’t get it off. Not...
