ex-soldier wanting to become a plasterer

Hi Muzza. I'll try to give you an idea of what to expect. Being keen to do the job is half the hurdle done. Just do the course, won't cost you much, and it gives you an idea of what's involved. What you will find though is as these courses tend to take you through fitting plasterboard to stud...

Compared to 2 years ago, the place is flat - literally. Last advert I had in their local paper recieved no response in 3 months. Previously 7 or 8 hits a week. But you are more than welcome to come look see.

    Help with plastered ceiling

Hi Julie. In my opinion, the skimmed plaster should never 'delaminate' from it's base - be it wall or ceiling. However, there are a few factors which may effect adhesion. 1, Improper preparation, where the original surface is unsuitable for skimming ie: whitewash type paints are a bugger and...

    plasterers eye

Stuff the spitting lark, perhaps one of those squee gee bottles is better - at least the water is clean....and I still keep one handy for those doh 'its going off quickly' moments. Anyway I'm a tall bugger so std height ceilings are comfortable for me, to avoid 'eye plops' i ensure I am well...

    curves

Yep thats what I do. However also if I'm feeling energetic, I'll make a curve out of some MDF so that when used edge on all you do is walk along with the edges touching wall and ceiling. look back and the curve is there....not necessary if the join angle is much more than 115/120 degrees though.

    8x4 plasterboard

I've had one like Skim's for around 5 years now. Lightweight and compact enough to fit in my C15 van with all my tools when I had it (now got a Relay). Piece of piss to erect/lug up stairs and so far, with steady use (no abuse) it has held up well. Got props too but only use them for holding...

    what do you do ???

Agreed walk away from the job, its not worth the risk of customer not paying you as it will look cr@p around the pipework...........unless the customer accepts the additional expense of removing the obsticles (prefferably by a qualified plumber).

    Wattle and daub costs query

OK Thanks for your responses, I was thinking a little light...it seems, circa 1.5k I'll quote around the 3k mark then.(remembering this ceiling will be done using modern materials only.)

    Wattle and daub costs query

Yes I suspect it is lath and plaster now you say it. I just need a feeling for a realistic price to quote the customer so they can give it to the insurance company for a comparison against the quote I am supplying to double skin and then skim using modern materials, this will leave the original...

Hi folks.(my first post - tho I have been lurkng on here for some time) I am in the process of quoting to double skin then skim a damaged wattle and daub ceiling with plasterboard and batons, the customer is also asking me for a quote to re-do the ceiling to original spec purely for comparison...
