Same guys have given us a quote for dining room which is only slightly smaller than living room and similar work needs doing (some boarding, ceiling and walls skimming) and he's quoted £660. Ceiling just skimmed this time, not boarded.
You're an impatient lot haha. Was waiting until both quotes were in - however, we have had two companies out yesterday. Both were horrified at how the place had been left - the first guy said it was the worst job he'd ever seen.
So, both r commended a full reskim. Beading around the fireplace...
Thank you! Yeah, from bits I've read on here I had figured the boards over where the dpc went is bad idea so intended to bring this up with the guy that's coming tomorrow.
Regarding the damp...it stemmed from the ends of the joists rotting and I think that was something to do with ventilation...
Nothing, just accept that I won't be paying him the remaining £340 he expects. I accept that I have lost £680 to him already + materials. I won't be paying him anymore. I will tell him this tomorrow and present him with the quote to rectify to back up my decision.
Thank you. I mean that, to all who helped on here. Had I not come here I probably would have convinced myself I was overreacting and allowed him to "rectify" the work. You guys have been bloody awesom :)
Haha. Ok, so I chickened out and ignored his phone call today - I texted him, and told him I would speak with him tomorrow after a plasterer had looked at the work, but that at this moment I was not comfortable letting him back to attempt to rectify.
I have been on mybuilder and shortlisted...
Funny you should say that, one of the three quotes I mentioned earlier was one of his mates...yet we still went with the wrong one. Mainly on account of his wait time. Now feel absolutely ridiculous going back to him...if I was him, I'd laugh at us!
Damp course was done by partners uncle, he's a builder. No guarantee as far as I'm aware. The floor was sinking so he went under the floorboards and the joists were damp n rotting. He replaced joists, put some kind of membrane or something down (I think?) and asked us to take plaster off a...
Thank you. Still don't really know what I'm asking of another plaster..."fix this please?" Or "re skim this please"? Probably one of those things where they'll have to see it though, right?
In all seriousness...we asked if we needed to strip the rest of the plaster (we would have done it ourselves) but he assured us that that was the way it was done. I didn't question it, and didn't even know what to Google to check if that was right. I'll be honest, it didn't sound standard, but...
I've included the dog in a pic - do I need to put a newspaper next to the light switch or something? If he doesn't wanna help I wish he'd just bugger off though rather than stir.
I've no intention of calling the police, or asking for money back tbh. I'm just not giving him anymore. Don't have a husband. My partner is female too. Go on, laugh it out...two idiot women conned by a cowboy tradesman. I know (I'll laugh about in a few weeks)
Excuse dog in background Just tried to take a pic of the wall from the side (coming in from dining room) where you can see the two boards one on top of the other
I suspected as much. The more it's drying out the worse it looks and the more the faults are obvious. I mean the switches and sockets were obvious immediately but every time I look at the walls I see more that needs fixing.
Concerned now about the boards as someone mentioned above. I do know...
Gps, i really don't appreciate your tone. You don't have to join in this conversation. If you don't believe me, please just don't bother responding and move on to another thread that you consider genuine. Simple.
On that note, if anyone from the NE would be interested in giving me a quote, I...
One last thing - is it normal to see the joins in the boards and the skrim? Not all are visible but some are. I mentioned it after the ceiling was "skimmed" but he said it was normal and wouldn't be noticeable after it was painted. I realise that's probably nothing when you look at the job as a...
My account fake? What makes you think that? I don't have the time or inclination to argue the toss with you gps, thank you for your contribution thus far.
Thank you to those who have given advice. If you're interested I'll update you after conversation with "plasterer" tomorrow.
There are loads of ridges on the ceiling (which is really f**k**g annoying because the reason for boarding it was to get rid of a textured ceiling!!) there are actually quite a few ridges, pimples and dints over the walls and ceiling. Then some patches look ok and really smooth.
Do you think the same for withholding the remaining £340 he's asked for? Is it reasonable for me to tell him to sling his hook and not pay for his last two days work? My worry is that if I invite him in to "rectify" he'll make it worse, and pricier to fix by someone better. I do not intend to...
The thing is, it wasn't "by a family friend cheap" his quote was comparable with the other quotes we had had - he wasn't the cheapest (has actually worked out the most expensive not even including the money I'll pay to get it putbright). If I was having this done by an apprentice or by a friend...
Thanks guys. I don't think I have the balls to ask for money back - i don't think he'd give it back anyway. I won't be handing over any more money though, and I won't be accepting his offer to attempt to rectify. I do worry about any backlash, but I'm settled on not paying him further. I have...
I got 3 quotes before going with this guy.
First guy we got from check a trade who quoted £890. Second guy was around the £750 mark. Third guy quoted £640 but wanted the cost of the materials upfront - he wanted me to give him the money so that he ordered it. Then Andy, who said he would...
I don't think Trading Standards are of any use to us, because I don't think he's registered (I know, I know, I realise I'm an idiot) he works full time for a company, "plastering" and works on the side...cash in hand.
He rendered a small external wall for my mother. Charged £60 and it looked good. I based my judgement on that one wall, and a recommendation from my brother. Brother feels awful. My partner and I feel stupid.
Not holding out. Just not much known. Name is Andy, from Darlington. An acquaintance of my brother. He works full time plastering show homes - somewhere further south, and does private work on a weekend. That's all I know. Bigger fool me, huh?
PVA was on the list of materials he gave us, and there's none left. So I'm assuming he's used it
Looks like I'll have a challenge getting someone to fix his s**t work then? It just gets worse
