Anyone wear a fitbit while plastering?

Everyone's an extremist these days. You could say its got zero relevance so is completely nonsensical. Or you could just say that the relevance is somewhat limited and will vary. That was kind of the whole point of the question. It's interesting to see what the range is and what different...

Anyone wear a fitbit while plastering?

I joke but did actually get asked out by a client a few weeks back after I finished the job. Would have gone for it but we couldn't agree on an hourly rate for my time on the date

Anyone wear a fitbit while plastering?

Yeah from what I understand you need one that takes your heart rate for a half decent reading. Otherwise it doesn't know if your taking normal steps or sweaty bum steps. I don't think I want to shell out for one myself, all I am curious about is the guys that have one, how many calories are we...

Anyone wear a fitbit while plastering?

Just curious. I often wonder how many calories one burns on a day of skimming, anyone? It's days like this are when I'm most interested. You know, those days when you're covering an artex ceiling that was near your size limit anyway and it's 28 degrees from 10am onwards. Those kind of days...

    Mixing SBR and PVA together

I experimented a lil bit today with a small face. 1:1 SBR:water and then a little bit of watered down PVA. Went on a treat, same hang time as the gritted walls. Haven't seen it dry or painted though tbf. Even the SBR and grit has saved me soooooo much time compared to when I was PVAing the...

    Mixing SBR and PVA together

Been skimming a whole house out for someone recently. Only a couple of rooms left to go. Paper been stripped everywhere. Really old dry walls which I am used to but these ones are particularly bad. Was using PVA for the first half of the job. Was taking a good 6 coats to make any difference...

    Got to use my brain

My uncle does this. Found his niche selling UV lamps for skin conditions online. He has a warehouse and staff so it basically runs itself now He works on average no more than 3/4 hours a day and no more than 3 days a week and he can do it from anywhere. So he moved from Kingston to Munich...

Next steps for damp front wall

I'm gonna join the "I'M NO EXPERT BUT...." gang. Condensation happens when warm air collides with a cool surface. I'm no expert but I do know that one for fact. 9 times out of 10, if you've got 1 damp wall in a room, it's an external wall. Often it might well be because there is rain or...

    Plastering and Rendering Supplies

Can I use my sand, cement and lime render as a floor screed?

Hi, Don't normally do any screeding. I am going to be rendering the inside of this fireplace for a customer using a sand, cement and lime mix (picture attached). They would also like to have the floor inside levelled with the skirting board (and I guess they will tile or something at a later...

Anyone else find life a struggle, nver mind running a business?

On the food subject, everyone should watch a documentary called 'land of hope and glory' before you make up your mind. You can watch it on YouTube for free. It's specifically about the UK industry and was made in 2017. Government have tried hard to censor it. I thought I was pretty clued up...

I got a plastic 600 recently after being intrigued for a long time. Found myself reading what other people were saying on here and thought this is pathetic should just try it myself. Only used on a couple of ceilings so far. Was quite good for flattening in but can't really imagine finishing...

    Wives with stable secure jobs

I'm very lucky. My girlfriend makes really good money in a very stable job for a booming company and is only on the up. It takes a lot of the direct pressure off me which is good. But on the flip side I feel a bit of indirect pressure to do well and earn more because I want to keep up. I think...

I float with gypsum but haven't touched sand and cement since for years to be honest, probably not since I was a labourer and that was external only. The Great British Gypsum Conspiracy

I did an A-level in economics back at college. Wish I could go back now and use this as a textbook example of why a monopoly is a bad thing and why we need competiton. There is no real competition to BG in UK. They could do whatever they like and know that we have no choice but to keep coming...

Quote back from Bauwer completely priced that option off the table as predicted. Thought that would happen with delivery costs for just a couple of bags at £53+ vat and £50 + vat for a roll of mesh (would rather pick up a cheaper alternative from merchants). Total quote £261 to do a tiny chimney...

Thanks for replies everyone. Idea of using boards without skim is a good one. Quicky, easy and no skim to worry about cracking on the inside. But would have to mess around with stop beads on the corners if not skimming inside so I think I'm just gonna render with lime. In an old cottage like...

    The Great British Gypsum Conspiracy

You know what, its a relief to hear this. I was convincing myself I was being paranoid. Personally I've noticed it being more prone to tearing later on. Like on last trowel or polish. I know how to get round tearing issues but like others said, we shouldn't have to. With experience you can get...

Seem to remember seeing @Rigsby , @Squarehead , @theclemo , @vfr12 talk about using Bauwer before. Any experience using around a fireplace? Or answers about general timing questions? Advice - damp on an internal wall

Okay thanks. And you can plaster over it with any backing plaster (limelite, Bauer, s&c, etc.) ? Sorry for the amateur hour. Plastic being so waterproof seems like there would be no suction and nothing for the plaster to bond to. I'm probably missing something obvious. You recommend any...

Advice - damp on an internal wall

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. I like your idea @JessThePlasterer. Have been interested in the stuff before but never taken the plunge. What's the top coat (finishing plaster) like to use? You experienced it much? Or is it safe enough to use multi-finish over the limelite base coat?

Advice - damp on an internal wall

Hi all, Just been to look at a job. It's in a shop /salon along a terraced road and they have some issues with damp, but mainly just on one wall. I wouldn't claim to be an 'expert' on damp so hoping for some backup/advice on the best remedy. The wall in question is a shared wall, backing on to...

What is this? Looks like skim over ply/mdf

It's just the ceiling and the lintel above the windows/door that have this stuff actually but it's all covered in a coat of pink plaster. Found some of the old thick stringy scrim but no paper backed scrim. I guess this stuff wasn't used for a long period then.
