Not done much thin coat myself , but found using a wet medium Regina sponge and a spray with water stops any tearing then a spat over the fat leaves a nice and flat finish.
Keep the boards as tight to the cornice as you can, any gaps bond and scrim, but there is no 100% guarantee you might get the odd hair line on the join. Take the old ceiling down leaving 4 inch’s around the cornice and butt up against that, but that’can be messy with an old lath plaster ceiling...
Because it’s a gizmos....and I need one....lol....just stick with a carbon steel trowel can’t go wrong ....... I think some people think the latest gadget out will make them a good plasterer, like some sort of magic wand....a plasterer can plaster with any trowel, looking at some of the work out...
