Old Victorian property with “damp problem”

Just don’t know how to lime plaster that’s all fella. Do you? Never done it, and don’t want to screw up someone’s house. Others on this site and on previous posts have said just multifinish everything. I figured I’d ask on here first, maybe get some helpful advice. Nope. Cheerio.

That’s what I thought tbh. Thanks for your (albeit sarcastic) advice.

Old Victorian property with “damp problem”

Afternoon all, been a while! I’ve got a job next week and not sure about it now. First off, it’s in an old 1900 property. Big drafty, grand old place. A damp man has been in and injected all that damp-proofing stuff on several walls at skirting level (not sure I believe in this process but...

    numb right hand

I was about to start a new thread similar to this. Been very busy recently and over the last couple weeks I'm waking up with my right hand clenched into a fist. It's like all the tendons have contracted. I have to almost prise my hand open. Fingers sort of pop back into place. Obviously I...

    Board Finish

Ay up all I've looked on the forum for an answer but nothing stood out. Simple question: Is there any difference in technique using board finish instead of multi? What are the limitations? Anything I should look out for while skimming? Boarding and skimming an entire bungalow, finished half of...

    Bonding on gloss surface

Thanks chaps. Blue Grit it shall be. Beddy, Customer wants it done that way so it'll be easier to paint. Mad Monk, I don't like using Blue Grit as it's difficult to use (I find it to be anyway!) Cheers for the advice!

    Bonding on gloss surface

Hi all, Hope all's well with ye? A fairly simple question, probably receive the usual varied answers heh heh but any help appreciated. I overboarded a cracked lath/plaster ceiling with 12mm boards, screwed into the joists no problem, nice flat solid ceiling again. It's an old Victorian house...

    Plaster in the Eye...a warning.

Been a while since my last post, hope all's well with one and all? Been decently busy of late...thus my first experience of this Spread-specific horror. Thought it my duty to warn newbies, DIYers or even seasoned pro's fortunate enough to have avoided this up till now... I've had that many near...

    Bathroom wall

Cheers Rory Used multi in my own bathroom with tiling round bath, sinks etc and bathroom paint elsewhere. Just wanted to check it was the same with reskims. Pva as per usual I guess!

    What do you suggest mate?

    Bathroom wall

Hi Lads/Ladies, Another easy answer for you all I'm sure: Very small job from a previous client. I've yet to go and look but simply put she wants 2 bathroom walls re-skimmed. Question is, can I/should I use multi? I presume/hope she means the walls not adjacent to the bath. Have plastered...

    Big ceiling.

Righto John, good advice. I use a 13" marshalltown. Spread friend o mine suggested not going bigger as gets too awkward.
  13. E

    Big ceiling.

Cheers for the encouragement mate! Decent words.
  14. E

    Big ceiling.

Cheers Marshy. One question: I bought the pole for it (slightly miffed as they have the extendables back in stock now but never mind) do you find it best to push it or pull it on ceilings?
  15. E

    Big ceiling.

Cheers for the advice John, actually tried that today with the hall and stairs and it's made a massive difference to the finish (went on easier and obviously faster too) What do you mean regarding the addition of bonding?
  16. E

    Big ceiling.

Well, that was it mate. Like it says: a (relatively) large ceiling. Large for me, brother!

    Big ceiling.

Hombres, As promised here are some photos of the (relatively) large ceiling from last week. Thanks to all for your help and advice. For the record, you'll be amused to know that what could've gone wrong did go wrong..... Baking hot weather, labourer spilt the second mix and then my paddle...

Reckon he'd let me have them for a song tbh. His yard stuffed with them, don't think he uses.

    Spat recommendations

Cheers Marshy Agree, so Reckon I'll just try it on some of the smaller walls I've got to do here to start with. Ceilings I'll stick to the trowel for now but hoping this new bit o' kit takes the back ache out of them in the future. Based in Liverpool so prob a bit far for you to come, offer...

Just thought the local shop just round the corner has tons of em. He lent me a few to prop up some ancient fan heaters he also lent me when I was trying to dry our kitchen out before we refitted it. The crates worked at least haha

    Big ceiling.

Sorry CT mate didn't read it right, only read hop ups. Crates and a plank could be just the ticket! And Cheers for the diagram BigK heh heh
  29. E

    Big ceiling.

Cheers bud, might try that on the front room. Ceilings a bit low though so mightn't have room. Doing a ceiling overboard and skim after this job though. High ceiling so your suggestion sounds spot on for that

Cheers Carys Hoping the EZE spat helps it along too

Any reason to choose aluminium over plastic? Or vice versa. Bought an plaziflex for some curved ceilings a bit ago. Worked a treat but found the plastic polished the plaster a little too much (ie might be a pain to paint)

Ceilings are not high enough. If anything it'd be easier if they were a foot higher. I could pretty much trowel standing directly on the floor but lose range like that.
  42. E

    Big ceiling.

Cheers Mike, just asked about that.
  43. E

    Big ceiling.

Cheers Marshy! Not derogatory at all, I know my limitations so take things steady whatever I'm doing. I've skimmed boarded ceilings before no problem, but I've had to blue grit this one for Thursday because previous owners thought gloss was a good look. Grrrr I was looking at a speedskim the...

    Big ceiling.

It's probably not that massive for a plasterer with more experience. I'd say it's Approx 30 sq m, large for me as I'm not the quickest. Fortunately not too high so can use hop up but awkward curved areas won't make it any easier. Have a labourer on hand, would rather do it in one hit so if...

Question or 2 for ye all.... I'm Halfway through plastering a house, re-skimming every room, some over boarding. Gone fine thus far but have been putting off the large lounge ceiling....but it's ceiling time now. Firstly, have pva'd twice as per usual but even with a labourer I'm probably...
