    Sponge grain coming through

So do you flatten pretty much straight after you've sponged then mate? No waiting for it to pick up?
  3. K

    Sponge grain coming through

General gist...I'm flattening too late. Cheers chaps, I'll try it tomorrow and get on it sooner when it's wetter

    Sponge grain coming through

Should I be sponging when the walls really quite soft then? Possibly where I've been going wrong I thought I might have been pressing too hard with sponge or using a s**t rough sponge float

    Sponge grain coming through

So I've been experimenting with a few guages lately using the sponge method. Lay on, flatten by laying in second coat. Flatten second coat. Wet wall, sponge up....then flatten, close, polish. However, I'm fighting against scratchy sponge grain showing in some areas on my final flattening. Any...

Nope to pva or nope to grit will be fine lol?

    Blue grit, shiney painted Artex.

Not used blue grit much, do I need to pva first, then grit? It's a Shiney painted Artex and wondering whether just grit will be fine. Thanks

    Filling the next day??

So kitchy...you've never ever asked a question when you were new to the game and keen to learn? You must be the natural I read about on my 2 hour skim course who can do 300m with his weak hand all in the time it took me to reply to this post in the DIY section hey. Lovely to have heard from ya...

    Filling the next day??

Might just do that to be honest. For future reference if it happened again in a small area....is this something that could be done? Filling when walls are not fully dry?

    Filling following day? :/

Hi all, I skimmed a few walls today in dimming light and it wasn't until I was able to get hold of a lamp I could see quite a few biggish holes and slight proud areas after the mix had started to go off. Can I just go straight in with filler tomorrow or do I have to now wait for the wall to...

    Dot/Dab to cover cavity?

Hi mate, could you secure a piece of wood to the wall I'm the cavity, then screw your new plaster board to that piece of wood whilst a little dab to secure your new board to the brick part?
  17. K

    re skim small area

Get a nice gloopy PVA mix so when you brush it on it behaves more like thick milk than water. Let it dry 30 mins or so. Then spit on your wall. If it dribbles straight down quite quick it should be ready for you to skim it. If your spit doesn't trickle down and kinda sucks in. Put another coat...

    Anglebead crack repair

I should have took a few earlier damn. Is it common in general for you guys to use stop beads when reskimming just one window return only?
  19. K

    Anglebead crack repair

Hi all, So....the underside of the upper window reveal needs patching following a new window. That's ok. There is a horizontal crack about an inch from the lip assumingly following the angle bead underneath. Is it better to place a stop bead on the very edge and skim to it. Or scrim them...

    Very basics. Apologies

Haha nah not a patch as such. It's a strip about 1m x 2.4m. Nope not been keyed. It's smoothish but not smooth enough to paint
  21. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Yeah been done years ago, just need to skim it now. Newby to going onto this stuff. Just need to know what to do here
  22. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Do you mean brush it off and skim it when it's bone dry? Or before the renders dry?
  23. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Gotcha! Sbr preps block / brick to accept s+c PVA (or blue grit as sons have suggested) preps s+c to accept skim.
  24. K

    Very basics. Apologies

How then do you prep dry s+c render for skim? I'm lost lol
  25. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Ah that's summed that up. Thanks tdj. Do you dilute yours or slap it on neat? I'm guessing treat it as I would PVA and wait for tacky etc? Or am I way off lol? I have reskimmed a couple of times over s+C by using strong PVA....is this a huge no no? Apologies for all the questions, just keen...
  26. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Ahh I see. So it's a slightly better alternative for sealing s+c than PVA prior to skimming with gypsum products?
  27. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Cheers for that tjd. I'm with flynnyman too, a quick clarification lesson on sbr would be great .....what's it used for typically?

Patch repair s+c render with bonding then finish?

Patch repair s+c render with bonding then finish?

I have to repair a patch in internal s cement render....it's gone back ky bare brick. What's the typical treatment for this? PVA loads, fill with bonding then finish with finish?? Or is there exceptions when skimming (if you can) with multi finish over this surface? Thanks again ppl
  30. K

    Very basics. Apologies

Hello... Done a fair big of plastering, reskims etc. However.... What do I do with old fully dry internal sand and cement render when I need to reskim it or patch repair? PVA / sbr / hardwall / bonding then multi? Help lol

    Quick bonding query

Ah cheers guys. Any tips on the scratching? How deep and far apart etc?
  33. K

    Quick bonding query

So scratch, weak PVA so it feels damp, then on with the multi? Any certain depth I need to scratch down into it?
  34. K

    Quick bonding query

Hi chaps, I bonded a wall out this morning with bonding and smoothed it off. Unfortunately I had to dash off so will be throwing finish on it tomorrow morning. Do I just go straight on it after a weak coat of PVA? Or do I need to scratch it or is it too late for that? Thanks in advanced

    Staffordshire Plasterers

Hi all, I'm going to hopefully add to the ppl that successfully have saught experience from posting on here. I'm looking to labour/plaster with plasteres for free to build on my plastering to date which covers most areas of plastering. I'm a amateur and just want to improve, speed up and...

  40. K

    Terminology

As a keen amateur, I'm always reading about plastering mostly on here. What's the difference / what are the same things - lay on - lay in - tighten - flattern - float up -Trowel up -Polish -Pass? Thanks again

    PVA and paint concern

Ahhh I'm with ya. What a frustration. I'm guessing there's no way of spotting this in paint before you get going either which adds to the frustration. Cheers for the wisdom guys. I'm guessing it's pointless just 'scraping the loose' as it will all become loose the longer the mix can hang on...

    PVA and paint concern

Cheers guys. I scraped it before PVA and it seemed solid, it only started playing up when I lashed the glue on. Is that typical of distemper dodgey paint? Can I scrape it off tomorrow even after it's been PVAd? It's only a small ceiling about 2x2ish with a curved edge on one side.

    PVA and paint concern

Hi ppl, I'm helping a mate skim his bedroom.....I PVAd the ceiling (previously wallpapered over paint) tonight, and when it was drying I touched the ceiling to check the drying rate and the paint came off on my fingertip. With hardly any pressure....but not in all parts of the ceiling though...

How do I know if the walls sealed enough?

Cheers mate. How longs a while? Like 20 mins or so?
  46. K

How do I know if the walls sealed enough?

Is there any tell take signs to tell if the PVA has done it's thing before I hit it with a mix? I've PVAd some walls no problem. Others still high suction, poor PVA, too weak PVA etc.... I want to know if there's a way of taking the guess work out of it all please
  47. K

    Artex ceiling question??

Cheers for that mate. And is it just experienced that allows you to tell if it's going to need bonding agent? Or is there specific things to look for that can take away the guess work?
  48. K

    Artex ceiling question??

Ahh cool. And probably a silly question but is artex generally thirsty/porus or does it usually behave? One coat bonding agent enough for a good suction rate? I just thought bonding agent was for glossy non porus style paint where a physical key would be an issue....wouldn't artex be a great...
  49. K

    Artex ceiling question??

Do you always wba/thistle bond it first regardless, or will just PVA do if I haven't got any at the time?
  50. K

Why 2 coats of PVA, not just one stronger one?

Cheers mate. Im more you're style but seems some ppl swearing by 2 coats and just wondered when you'd chose one style over the other. No harm either way I guess so long as the walls have had their thirst suitably quenched ;)
