    paperwalls

The old paste is just something you cant avoid sometimes. You wont know its there till you PVA it, and by then, you might as well have a cuppa and relax for a bit. Make sure you do wait till its ready to hit. Dont be tempted to hit it sooner or your stuff will slide about all over the place. And...

    plastering - some guidance please

Try hitting two walls at the same time. :D Two hits a day mate, thats all you need to do. If you are doing one wall at a time, them of course its going to take an age to do the job! Thats not so much a 'speed' thing, but more a 'common sense' thing. ;)

    plastering - some guidance please

If you can do the walls of a normal sized room in a day, finishing late afternoon/early tea time, you have nothing to worry about at all. (domestic) You might have been plastering for 5 years, but unless your doing it a lot, you wont get your speed up to match guys doing it every day.

    insurance work

Most companies will send out an investigator if the price is over 1000 quid, to have a look. Most companies now send a cheque to the customer to cash. Most companies will accept one quote. The customer can tell the insurance mob that they want you for the job. All you need is to type up an...

    Plastering over wood chip

Never ever ever plaster over any kind of paper. Guys who do it are chancers, or work for the Council. :D If you are going to go through the hassle of giving it a rough coat, then back the next day, then why not just strip it on the first day and hit it on the second? Then you KNOW it will be...

    What van does everyone drive?.

Citreon C15...... ....Stop laughing! >:( :D Bought it for 900 quid 3 years ago, and its never ever gave me a problem. Paintwork is still spotless and its only done 45 thousand miles, despite it being an old P reg. And its yellow. :D They dont miss me coming!

plastering above kitchen cupboards! would u do it?

Re: plastering above kitchen cupboards! would u do Its part of the job. These bits need plastered just like any other. The more you do, the better you get at them. And quicker. They are a bit of a pain, but they need done.

    pva plasterboard

I have used PVA on old boards. Or boards which have had paper stripped from them, or artex removed, or whatever. But freshly put up boards dont need glueing.
  17. T

    new tool!!!!!!!!!!

Aye! He is spreading it pretty thin, and taking his bloody time :-/ It just looks like a casting trowel. Thats what i use to get a scoop or two onto my hawk. Having to bend down and take a scoop for every single application? No thanks ;D

My assessor is coming out to see me on monday

I would have thought the domestic side would have won whatever it is your trying to do? Sites are easy, although hard graft. Domestic is hard, with more attention to detail, plus hard graft. :D

    HOLE IN CEILING

A hole? In gyproc (plasterboard) you need something to fill the whole with. Either do the old screw in a bit of gyproc, or you can use one of those 'Vol...' something, patchup doo da's. Or just do the auld patch and repair, whith the gyproc, whith some muck behind it. Lwt it set, then fill it...

    Damp Problems?

Aye, thats me. As i say, it still looks damp to me. After six days of drying, even finish on top of bonding should be dry. White fluff? I have never had this, but i imagine having any fluff after the customer has had damp is a bad sign. Opinions? After six days of drying, it looks to me like...

    dots

I use a guager trowel on the wall, or just dot it on the board then fire it up like that. Drywall adheasive is brilliant.
  23. T

on reskimming a small wall do i still need pva

It wont stick quicker, it prolly wont stick at all. If its silk, give it one coat of thick PVA then get your buckets and gear set up. Have a cuppa, then it should be ready. If its matt paint, one or two coats of PVA diluted. The more you try and rush a job, the longer it will take. But you...

what to use where the trowel wont fit

Aye, there are loads of different sized small tools for that kinda work. Scrapers in different sizes, and there are other small trowels for these jobs. I have a load of different sized ones, and i call them all 'doofer's'. ''Scott, pass me the wee doofer'' ''What one? This one?'' ''Naw, the...

    price of plaster

BnQ have upped their prices here. You used to get 5 bags for £3.74 each. But now you need to buy ten to get them at that price >:( Its £4.38 for one bag. Scandal!
  26. T

How do you apply your PVA

PVA? Just dillute it to whatever you need, roll it on, use a brush to get into the edges and round sockets. Get your buckets and water ready. Give the walls another coat. Have a cuppa. If it needs it, give it another coat as you get your mix going. (Thats if its really dry walls) Hit it when...

    Painting Newly Skimmed Walls

At LEAST three days to dry, then coat it with the tenner a bucket matt white. Maybe two coats depending how it looks. Then put on your colour or whatever paint you have for a finish. If the roller slides like f*** then the plaster is not ready yet :D It should be all pink coloured. Dont buy...

    Pain in the neck

It seems lately that every job i get has really annoying surfaces to plaster. If its not silk paint, its badly put on gyproc which bounces all over the place and with gaps you could climb through. ;D Last week i had a few rooms to do in a house, and the walls had old wallpaper paste on them...

Nailing Thin Coat Beads for a re-skim

I screw them on if its gyproc walls. If i need to use nails, then its galvanised ones. Iron ones rust and show through your plaster AND the paint. If its old plaster walls, then i will just stick them on with finish, drywall, bonding or whatever. After a good PVA.
  31. T

Filling in an old fire place

I have bricked them up before. Then bonded and finished. But normally i just fix and/or jam some timber strats (2x2") into the cavity, leaving enough space for gyproc to be screwed in flush with the rest of the wall. Tape and skim.
  32. T

    PVA price shocker!

The basic stuff from BnQ and Wickes up here has been around a tenner for at least 6 years! I keep meaning to buy my glue, beads and tape, etc.... in bulk somewhere else, but i never do ::)
  33. T

    painted lining paper

Depending on the size, sometimes its easier just to rip the crap boards off and put up new ones. Scraping paper off gyproc is bloody murder! (most of the time) And the boards are usually left in a right mess to plaster.

    Advice

Hello mate :) After an 8 week course, you should have learned the basics of how to get the muck off your hawk and onto the walls. The thing that gets to me with plastering courses, is that they waste time showing you how to render outside walls :-/ Which is not really plastering. Although they...

Kitchen nearly finished £300 for this

Impossible to tell from that video. Looks neat enough. How does it feel if you run your hand down the wall? :-/
  37. T

    ni beading

If its Gyproc or similar i will screw them in. One screw per foot kinda thing. Nails work too, but screws are better. If its a solid wall, i stick it on with bonding or finish. Whatever im using. Just make sure its well glued/sealed and make sure you let it set before you go for any hard work on...

    cowboy customer alert!!!

Got to agree with this. If there was a 1/4 inch lip you should have spotted it yourself and sorted it out. You made it easier for him to snub you when you turned up late too. But thats assuming there actually was a 1/4 lip! Have you seen this yourself? If not i would want to see it. If someone...

    3rd coat

The plaster doesn't all dry out at the same rate. Once its set it still takes a few days to dry properly. Thats why you advise customers to give your plaster at least 3 days before painting it. Depending on what you have done.

    venetian plaster..

I knew a guy who done a course on it, and it does look fantastic. He must have priced over a hundred jobs and never got a single one. Its too expensive for most people and is more likely to be companies/reception areas etc.... who will want it done. I fancied it myself, but if im not going to...

    The eye hospital

Aye, once. Doing a ceiling and got a good splat in the eye. Couldnt get it out, and neither could the customer who was a nurse, using a squeezy eye wash. anyone want this job?

I didn't mean that as a cheeky comment by the way! :-[ What i mean is that most site work is going over boards. But domestic work is sometimes a bit footery with wee bits like that. Plus im drunk coz im not working tomorrow. :D
  46. T

    anyone want this job?

Do you do a lot of site work? Coz i only do domestic and pretty much every job has these wee bits in them >:( But i either one coat them, or more often, just two coat them at the one time. If you know what i mean? The small tools in my bucket are called 'doofers' ;D

    lines from the trowel

You will get lines when you lay it on. When you have layed it on, let it pull in a bit, then go over the lines. This 'might' leave more smaller lines but thats ok. Get your second coat on. You will have lines again. Let it pull in and take the lines out again. Now as the plaster pulls in, you...
