The old paste is just something you cant avoid sometimes. You wont know its there till you PVA it, and by then, you might as well have a cuppa and relax for a bit. Try hitting two walls at the same time. :D Two hits a day mate, thats all you need to do. If you are doing one wall at a time, them of course its going to take an age to do the job! Thats not so much a 'speed' thing, but more a 'common sense' thing. ;)

Re: plastering above kitchen cupboards! would u do Its part of the job. These bits need plastered just like any other. The more you do, the better you get at them. And quicker. They are a bit of a pain, but they need done.

I have used PVA on old boards. Or boards which have had paper stripped from them, or artex removed, or whatever. But freshly put up boards dont need glueing.

A hole? In gyproc (plasterboard) you need something to fill the whole with. Either do the old screw in a bit of gyproc, or you can use one of those 'Vol...' something, patchup doo da's. Or just do the auld patch and repair, whith the gyproc, whith some muck behind it. Lwt it set, then fill it...

It seems lately that every job i get has really annoying surfaces to plaster. If its not silk paint, its badly put on gyproc which bounces all over the place and with gaps you could climb through. ;D Last week i had a few rooms to do in a house, and the walls had old wallpaper paste on them...

I screw them on if its gyproc walls. If i need to use nails, then its galvanised ones. Iron ones rust and show through your plaster AND the paint. If its old plaster walls, then i will just stick them on with finish, drywall, bonding or whatever. After a good PVA.

I have bricked them up before. Then bonded and finished. But normally i just fix and/or jam some timber strats (2x2") into the cavity, leaving enough space for gyproc to be screwed in flush with the rest of the wall. Tape and skim.

The basic stuff from BnQ and Wickes up here has been around a tenner for at least 6 years! I keep meaning to buy my glue, beads and tape, etc.... in bulk somewhere else, but i never do ::)

Depending on the size, sometimes its easier just to rip the crap boards off and put up new ones. Scraping paper off gyproc is bloody murder! (most of the time) And the boards are usually left in a right mess to plaster.

If its Gyproc or similar i will screw them in. One screw per foot kinda thing. Nails work too, but screws are better. If its a solid wall, i stick it on with bonding or finish. Whatever im using. Just make sure its well glued/sealed and make sure you let it set before you go for any hard work on...

The plaster doesn't all dry out at the same rate. Once its set it still takes a few days to dry properly. Thats why you advise customers to give your plaster at least 3 days before painting it. Depending on what you have done.
