    Yell.com

I advertised with yell online about 2 weeks ago and I must say its probably worth you doing it. I paid around £340 for the year and I've had about 5 calls so far. Its already brought in one job that has paid for the advert. you can choose for a cheaper line advert also instead of the box advert...

    Float & set work

Hello again guys Just got a job in from a builder mate of mine. I've got a load of float and set work to do over yellow stock brick work. Just wondered what the going rate is for float and set work now for labour only not including the plaster. Normally I price by the day but this job is a bit...

    artex staircase

No not at all. I spend a lot of time sitting down and pricing jobs. I always break things down and work out how long things are going to take me then I add materials and the labourers money to the price. Once you worked a price out and your satisfied that its reasonable then stick to it. I've...

    pet hates

I had to skim round by a saniflow today, they always smell like s@*t! I hate plastering in bathrooms and toilets that have already been fitted out!

    5m2 ceiling

£180 for that ceiling is the right price. If thats all you had to do for the day then you still have to charge a days money plus materials. Its a touch though that she's asked to quote for the rest of the ceilings at £28 per square m! Ha! Nice one

    Sand & Cement

try brooming the bricks down to get rid of any loose particles, then wet the wall down and then seal with a diluted pva solution. This is what i do and everything seems to stick like dogs poo to a blankett. Gyprime is good but quite expensive. If your using sand and cement, put some rendamix in...

    board finish

board finish is beautiful gear, I love it! Of course you can use it on a normal wall but it will hang around a bit longer than multi. Beautiful on boards but will say try to use multifinsh on anything other than board as it does suit better.

Perfect skimmin achievable without plastic trowel?

Re: Perfect skimmin achievable without plastic tro I think it all comes down to preference and what trowels you work best with. I've never used a plastic trowel but have tried both stainless steel and carbon steel. I prefer stainless steel for all my work but i know a few plasterers that work...

    metre rate

yeh £8.50 per square m for skim sounds about right, especially working domestically. How much do you guys charge for labour on float & set work? for both sand and cement and for modern plaster backgrounds. I normally charge around £16 per square metre

    Extreme Plastering

I climbed out of a sky light the other day onto the roof of the house i was working in. I took up there with me all my wastage plaster which i rolled up into balls for amunition. Like a sniper I waited for all the lads on site to go in and out of the house and pelted them with plaster from...

    Bonding

start with one handful of cement in your mix first. You can get a feel for how quickly it sets the bonding off then and on your next mix apply the cement accordingly ;)

    Goldtrowel or Ableskills?

I've got a mate who did a weeks course with able skills and he really enjoyed it. He was very pleased with what he had learnt. I do not know of anyone that has been to gold trowel so cannot comment on them i'm afraid.

    Skimming over gloss paint surfaces

I use sugar soap quite often, its great for cleaning grease and dirt off the walls. Never used wickes bonding agent, i'm going to give it a go ;)

    Skimming over gloss paint surfaces

Just wondered what you all do when plastering over gloss painted walls or ceilings? I always tend to worry about the bond between this type of paint with the plaster. I've never liked and have never used pva over these surfaces as I just don't see there being a good enough bond between the...

    one coat plaster

Are you referring to universal one coat or one coat finish? I assume you mean one coat finish and that I have never used as I believe you get a better job and finish than with a two coat finish system. As for universal one coat, I have used this quite a few times and I quite like the stuff. An...

Large wall and not gone well!!

Dear all fello plasterers! I just thought i'd share with you a wall that I skimmed that didn't finish as well as the rest of my work on the job. akward places

I never feather any finish plaster and as for radiators I always request that they are taken off the wall. If customers wish to leave the brackets on the wall I have no problem plastering round them. For plastering round akward places I have a selection of small contractors tools e.g small tool...

    What a weekend

yeh, when the plaster drags it annoying isn't it!? Ha! I get it once in a while and it puts me in a right stinking mood! I normally find that it only occurs when i'm plastering over artex. Has anyone any ideas of why it happens? My theory is that the bond between the artex, pva and 1st coat of...

    Crap Multi

watch those warehouses like B&Q! I've seen them keep palets of finish outside in their yards not even under shelter or in the dry. It could be the fact that the bags of multi also hadn't been stored correctly. Great place though, the big warehouses stock so much for plasterers and do great...

    Plastering: An Encylopaedia

    Bellcast beads

Do you mean a trap as in the run away angles either side of the bellcast bead or are you refering to the underside of the bellcast? Also I was thinking today, what calculations do you use for calculating quantities of materials for rendering jobs? ie sand, cement and lime etc. I used to have...

    First go!!!!! pic's

it looks fairly good. It looks by the trowel marks that you need to work more logically and consistantly. Normally with all surfaces the i plaster, i always work from left to right (being right handed) and in a "typewriter" style fashion. I'm sure you've heard of this before. If working on a...

    Bellcast beads

Hello fello plasterers! I wondered if anyone can help me. I haven't as yet done much rendering and one thing that frustrates me is applying and finishing bellcast beads. How would you normally fix bellcast beads to the wall? sometimes i've tacked them with nails to hold in place and then dub...
