    I'm using something like this on a job at the moment aswell, very red looking sand, I'd describe it as fine fine sharp, seems ok, from travis perkins, probably wouldn't go too weak on it, and mix it a bit stiff, spreads and rules off ok.

    I'm not a rendering expert, but I think your best bet might be to fill the cracks with SBR and then render over the top with some type of thin coat system with mesh. If you hack it off there is no guarantee your gable end wouldn't collapse. the render is probably holding it together.

    Should be alright as it's been skimmed, tiler would probably have sealed the plaster before tiling aswell. If it would have been straight onto the normal plasterboard it could be a problem. Not recommended.

    same as, only use I ever heard of sbr for is adding to neat cement for scudding walls or sealing screeds, I met one bloke once who told me he added it to sand and cement render and it wouldn't stick to the wall. I said nothing. at a push you might use it to seal an old wall, but sbr won't help...

    use a plastic stop bead and snip it at intervals to get it to curve, maybe use a wooden template underneath aswell to help get the shape.

    wattle and daub, you might be best off using dung instead of mud, it will provide more strength when dry.
