A mate of mine used zinnser Gardz sealer on a artex ceiling that was artexed, and it was brilliant stuff, it was touch dry in about 40 mins and rock hard in 4hrs.
it is meant for the decorating trade to seal in problem surfaces that cause suction or porous/flaky issues.

I probably should have said that it's a rental we are doing up and we are going to tile or paint it depending in what levels / finish we can obtain. We just want to make it safe so no one trips up.
Hi guys, I've got a bit of a problem with a area that's out side a back door of a house that has got a concreted area that is two different levels. Basically the area is about 10 feet long and 2 feet deep and I've got to make up about an inch on the deepest part going down to half an inch along...
I'm glad this thread came up coz I'm doing up this house to rent and it's got a similar problem, damp only showing through now though. When we took the place over it had been converted into two flats ( badly!) and the guy who did it ran out of money and left it in a state. Anyway he cut a hole...
I've just bought a Mikita 18v with 101 accessory kit included ( it also has 2 batteries) from Robert dyas for £ 125 inc of vat & del , brilliant!! Screw fix has the same pack for £172 , a bloody rip off.
I tend to wear the widest fitting safety trainers that I can buy , but whatever I get six months or so later the inside top of the toecap wears away and I get massive holes in my socks at the toe and heel. So I've started to buy and wear Tescos workwear socks ( £5 for 3 pair) so we will see how...
The majority of what I take on is refurbishing houses for letting (a sort of pension plan) and helping a couple of mates out that I just charge materials and a few beers!
After I started the thread I thought what the hell, i will send selco a e mail about just buying a few bits and pieces without having a card ( because I don't have a business as such just doing small jobs) and they eventually sent a reply to say you have to have a card to buy from their stores...
Yes I agree, the only thing with some of these builders merchants is they don't tend to show their prices clearly so perhaps that's why they have these trade cards
Hi guys, been watching some of the threads on buying trowels and I was thinking of buying a ox trowel from serco but I don't have a trade card. Does anyone know if you can just walk in and buy stuff as normal , after all said and done you still have to pay the vat so what is so different?
I have had a closer look at the render surface now that all the patches have been exposed and there is no visible sign of a scratch coat key but it isn't dusty so will just pva and skim . I wont be rushing to get the steamer out too quickly in future!
And if it dosn't work I can take it to bits and shove it up the .... Of the bloke who put the sodding stuff on the wall in the first place!!:RpS_cursing:
The paper on this property was a bloody nightmare it was vinyl and in some places the top layer just wouldn't budge and elbow grease and patience ran out in equal measure!
Hi , everyone ! I am helping a mate to refurb a house built in the 1990s and as we have been steaming off the wallpaper we have had patches of the skim plaster fall off in places that reveal the underlying render it was spread on. I was wondering what has caused this to happen as I have done...
Just a little note to say hi , I'm not a full time plasterer I just do some refurb work on house lettings but would welcome any advice as I have only been plastering a few months ( thanks to gold trowel) .
Sorry , I think I should have said that I have used tile adhesive to stick a bit of board to the bottom of a wall so I could fit some skirting where the backing plaster had fallen out
Hi, if it's just a small area say 1m square and you have any tile adhesive knocking about then use that , only apply it a little thicker than for a tile
Personally I would put a small handful of cement in the bonding coat and float as usual. This is a good tip to use in winter when everything takes soooo long to firm up
Try taping the cracks then go over with joint compound feathering ou as you go , maybe 30cm then paint/ paper but if that looks rubbish then skim the whole wall.
