Not sure what brands do it in 5 litre tubs rather than 10 litres. So much gets wasted in the 10 litre tubs before one sometimes can use it again before it goes off. marvellous gear though.

well new builds, ive done some enormous ceilings done in steel framework. Never any problems with cracking there, just good boarding and standard fibre tape and skim. All about the timbers i think to blame.

actually malc thats a very good idea. Ive had many clients with large ceilings with that same problem. Normally as you know the timbers breathe especially when theres a damp atmosphere in a non ventilated loft, and it HAS to crack. I normally paper tape and use joint filler skim over the tapes...

Clients talking about the STO brand acrylic now. Basically onto brick what can you guys advise using if they want acrylic. Also any pitfalls against monorex etc? And does it prevent staining as much as it claims?

agreed. bond it or blue grit. Liberal coat of that. takes 24 plus hours to set. Just skim straight over that, shouldnt have any problems then.

So its a 2 trowel finish? Apply your 2 coats, flatten with speedskim then when times right dry trowel with a plastic trowel ? Have i got that right?

Jesus I am so behind the times here. Will someone explain please. Do you apply the two coat skim just as normal then finish with a speedskim then plastic trowel ( ive never seen or used neither). So the speedskim is like a big caulker? You must have to use a trowel for the edges though?

Jewsons... good god you need your credit card clear when you go in there.shocking prices. And yet when youre buying a lot they can be cheaper than anyone. I prefer Burrels but im pretty sure they only do gyproc.

aha I thought it would be something like that, own brands normally are. probably says on the bag somewhere if id bothered to look. Which national merchants sell knauf rather than gyproc?

Gyproc can be a bit chaulky I find. I vastly prefer the white product. On smaller jobs I even use wickes own brand, quite nice stuff actually but not cheap. The stores very convenient for me and most boards and plaster is cheaper than the merchants amazingly.

My kick is seeing the customers thankful faces when ive replaced a ceiling for them that had dropped down or full room plastered after whatever damage ???

Oh and they changed the valves on 7 rads aswell in with that.

I agree on your first point mac. I even have friends who think any tradesmen they require rated people etc is the way to go. You cant get through to them that its just another way of advertising /scam, theyre no more protected and probably pay more for the job to pay for the advertising. However...

Funnily, ive only recently gone back to board and stand too. Went years not using them as I was away from site situations. Mainly domestic but a couple of large float and skim jobs forces it back out of retirement doesnt it :). Much better when you can use it I think.. Keeps your mixing bucket...

I have a large job im quoting to remove old existing render, hollow and allowing water penetration , and im going to replace with probably parex monorex render. Now, will i need to apply a base product over the old brickwork before applying the render or will a good stiff brush over the bricks...

This is why dry lining and ames taping is crap. A skim coat of plaster when built eradicates this problem.

To remove the bows you could simply remove that damaged section leaving the board covering the two joists either side to overboard onto. Now ..... if youre unlucky the bows could be the joists themselves, solution to that depending on situation...

all i can think is the suctions been so high when youve applied the bond it, its sucked all the goodness out of it and not worked properly, allowing the wall to react after skimmed when the water from that soaks in.

Normally once the bond it has set and theres no problems it should skim ok. Common problems are listed above. Just one of those things to put down to experience. Very unusual to blow as the bond it acts as a barrier and key. Id chip it back to the backing plaster until your happy thats whats...
