    dog rough

there was a big gouge there i noticed which he quickly skimmed his camera over. Maybe i was mistaken. Ill have to go back and look frame by frame :) Actually nah, im not that sad. But hey im fairly new to the thru colour render game. First time i did it it probably wasnt much better, no spat or...

    Learning the trade?

Yep as captain caveman said, get in with working alongside someone who s been in the game years who does a good variety of work. Listen and learn. Theres a million and one apprentices out there now on courses all 'achieving' nvq2. Frankly the vast majority of them i wouldnt allow them to mix for...

Why OH Why do people think by putting a video like that on you tube will make their business look more professional, no doubt links galore on their website too. Im astounded at some of the stuff out there. Dont they realise they look like total idiots :) Oh watch out for my up and coming videos...

advice about plastering over stickle artex possibly with asbestos

Hi Clare. So many conflicting bits of advice and we re all tradesmen of many years so for what its worth heres my advice too. Regarding rates, for a one off ceiling like yours people dont give a metreage rate. They generally look at it, work out time and materials and arrive at a figure. Metre...

Skimming Artex vs removing or boarding

We probably all do ignore it to get the job done. I always knock the heads off a stipple ceiling with a floor scraper or trowel. Time will tell, no symptoms so far as i never wear a mask :0

    Ford keys??

Yeh I had that problem with my audi car last year. cost me over 400 quid to have 1 key that opens and starts the car. Internet search is the best way as luckily most vehicles dont HAVE to go through the dealership. Beware off buying on ebay for key alone. Theyre normally cheap fakes that cant be...

    Point taken

Small Builders really f**k me off. we ve been doing our game for years and years and years. You go to price the job and give best advice, explain how youre gonna tackle the job and give a price with materials. Oh no they say, Ill get materials ( first warning bell) you arrange a day to do it...

    blue grit

Not sure what brands do it in 5 litre tubs rather than 10 litres. So much gets wasted in the 10 litre tubs before one sometimes can use it again before it goes off. marvellous gear though.

    Cracked ceilings again

well new builds, ive done some enormous ceilings done in steel framework. Never any problems with cracking there, just good boarding and standard fibre tape and skim. All about the timbers i think to blame.
  10. A

    Cracked ceilings again

actually malc thats a very good idea. Ive had many clients with large ceilings with that same problem. Normally as you know the timbers breathe especially when theres a damp atmosphere in a non ventilated loft, and it HAS to crack. I normally paper tape and use joint filler skim over the tapes...

    parex acrylic

Clients talking about the STO brand acrylic now. Basically onto brick what can you guys advise using if they want acrylic. Also any pitfalls against monorex etc? And does it prevent staining as much as it claims?

    Plaster in the eye

Part of the trade getting splashes in the eye now and again. As someone said, cupboards are the worst as you cant get your head out of the way. you can normally feel it slipping off the back edge of your trowel, the times ive just shut my eyes as space was too tight and got my face covered...

    Bring on the good weather!!!

providing its not raining i like rendering in dull cooler weather much better than in the sun anyday :)
  16. A

    Did it stick ???

agreed. bond it or blue grit. Liberal coat of that. takes 24 plus hours to set. Just skim straight over that, shouldnt have any problems then.
  17. A

    Soooo I bought

Yes raggles I think I may be doing the same before the weeks out. Been on telling other guys about it today and the comment by ??? who said best invention he s seen since the trowel.

Anybody else gone quiet at the moment?

Busy for me. Busiest ive been for two years. It wont last though.
  19. A

    Soooo I bought

are we talking in codes here lol. What is a spat? and a plazi is plastic trowel I assume? Am I so far behind the times ??? So much for being stuck up north and working traditional methods day in day out for 25 years :) well, 30 years actually gulp. Is it time to retire yet.
  20. A

    Soooo I bought

So its a 2 trowel finish? Apply your 2 coats, flatten with speedskim then when times right dry trowel with a plastic trowel ? Have i got that right?
  21. A

    Soooo I bought

Jesus I am so behind the times here. Will someone explain please. Do you apply the two coat skim just as normal then finish with a speedskim then plastic trowel ( ive never seen or used neither). So the speedskim is like a big caulker? You must have to use a trowel for the edges though?

    Knauf Drywall Adhesive

Jewsons... good god you need your credit card clear when you go in there.shocking prices. And yet when youre buying a lot they can be cheaper than anyone. I prefer Burrels but im pretty sure they only do gyproc.
  23. A

    Knauf Drywall Adhesive

aha I thought it would be something like that, own brands normally are. probably says on the bag somewhere if id bothered to look. Which national merchants sell knauf rather than gyproc?
  24. A

    Knauf Drywall Adhesive

Gyproc can be a bit chaulky I find. I vastly prefer the white product. On smaller jobs I even use wickes own brand, quite nice stuff actually but not cheap. The stores very convenient for me and most boards and plaster is cheaper than the merchants amazingly.

OK whats your fav-aspect of being a spread

My kick is seeing the customers thankful faces when ive replaced a ceiling for them that had dropped down or full room plastered after whatever damage ???

    Hate plumbers

I had a floor standing boiler removed, pipework changed and a new combi put on the wall, new vent coredrilled out etc . Got change out of 1200 quid
  28. A

    Radiator brackets

Yeh I always refuse to touch rads.( learnt the hard way) Unless theyre new valves theyre pretty much guaranteed to leak when you put them back on. I always tell clients they need to sort that and my insurance is void if i remove/ put them back on. Brackets during the skim, to be honest i just...

Hey I often still work alongside my father when times are busy. Rated People ?

I agree on your first point mac. I even have friends who think any tradesmen they require rated people etc is the way to go. You cant get through to them that its just another way of advertising /scam, theyre no more protected and probably pay more for the job to pay for the advertising. However...

Gone back to the spot and...

Funnily, ive only recently gone back to board and stand too. Went years not using them as I was away from site situations. Mainly domestic but a couple of large float and skim jobs forces it back out of retirement doesnt it :). Much better when you can use it I think.. Keeps your mixing bucket...

    Another monocouche question

Sorry I mean price per metre to buy the product

    Another monocouche question

cheers, with the monogris im assuming thats similar to the weber rend aid. Does it work out around the same price per metre roughly?
  37. A

    Another monocouche question

I have a large job im quoting to remove old existing render, hollow and allowing water penetration , and im going to replace with probably parex monorex render. Now, will i need to apply a base product over the old brickwork before applying the render or will a good stiff brush over the bricks...

Fixing plasterboard to existing dot and dab wall using screws

This is why dry lining and ames taping is crap. A skim coat of plaster when built eradicates this problem.

    Overboard uneven ceil

Theres always so many variations on pro s ideas of methods to be used. First and foremost is understanding by examination exactly what and why the situation is. I have in the past done as stated above only to discover the whole timber structure rotten through and had to replace the lot before i...

    Overboard uneven ceil

yeh pulling whole ceilings down can be a very messy job ESPECIALLY lathed ceilings. Plus you have the waste to dispose of. What i meant was Biggsy, normally bows in ceilings are water damaged boards that get soaked and bow between the joists which is where they are obviously fixed. You can break...

    Rated People ?

These companies really annoy me. theres loads now, all claiming theyre unique and they have tens of thousands of jobs coming in.. but a) who the f*** are them to rate me? All their experience is as a salesman sat at a desk b) To pay a monthly fee plus buying the right to simply quote for each...
  44. A

    Overboard uneven ceil

To remove the bows you could simply remove that damaged section leaving the board covering the two joists either side to overboard onto. Now ..... if youre unlucky the bows could be the joists themselves, solution to that depending on situation...

    Hand application/machine application

I hope the course comes quickly, theres 6 rendering jobs ive priced in the past few weeks, all of them monocouche. would love to know the variation of price per metre but slap my hand harshly ... thats not allowed discussion on this forum :) What im quoting is healthy for me I know.

    Blown plaster newly skimmed walls

all i can think is the suctions been so high when youve applied the bond it, its sucked all the goodness out of it and not worked properly, allowing the wall to react after skimmed when the water from that soaks in.
  49. A

    Blown plaster newly skimmed walls

Normally once the bond it has set and theres no problems it should skim ok. Common problems are listed above. Just one of those things to put down to experience. Very unusual to blow as the bond it acts as a barrier and key. Id chip it back to the backing plaster until your happy thats whats...

    Float and set
