No worries, if you saw the room in question then you would be slapping the hassle factor on the price of the job, I know I would if I was a plasterer.
Lozzer.
Hi, yes I understand that but I can't skim and would have to get a plaster in to do it, it would be no fun for the plasterer because with all my stuff in there space is really tight. that's just the way it is hence I want to have a go at joint filling and sanding etc.
Lozzer
Never done joint filling before, I have fitted tapered edge plasterboard in the rooms of our house, are there ready mixed easy sand fillers that can do all the coats ie: fill to finish (then sand flat) with the same filler?
If so how many coats/stages, some research seems to say two some...

Worsctershire, don't want to be any more precise than that, I have never been to the house, so far as I can gather the house owner and the bloke who did the job have parted company, don't want to get into a slanging match or anything, just professional advice as to what the procedure/materials...
No friend, there's only one Lozzer, what yer see is what yer get, I live in Cornwall, the house in question is up in the Midlands. I have no idea who the bloke was who did the rendering that cracked like crazy paving, I spent many years working on building/construction sites both in the UK and...
Ok but what mix etc, sand, cement, lime? PVA? SRB? EML? these are the things the guy in question needs to know so that he will at least have an idea as to what's what when he gets another plasterer in to do the job.
johniosaif is the only one so far that has given advice as regards to method...
If the sand was incorrect then maybe he was a bad plasterer....anyway the said plaster has now moved on, I think words might have been exchanged, the owner still wants the job doing and as I was already a member of this forum I thought it a good idea to ask which method/materials was the best to...
No, it is not my job at all far from it, the idea of knowing which is the best method and materials to use (via this forum) is so he will have an idea what materials/spec. etc to look out for in any decent plasterers quotes, in a nutshell the guy concerned has been dealt a bum deal through no...
Hi, first, I am not a plasterer.
Ok a guy I know was doing some home maintainance and he noticed that some of the old rendering was coming loose, he tapped out all the loose stuff which revealed what appears to be the scratch coat of the original render, the house might be brick or block, I am...
Many thanks for that, yes the off cuts I refered to were from an external job, I've never used it before (bloody heavy) TP got me sixteen sheets of Aquapanel Exterior to skin the outside of our small extension I am building, their weight advice on the ticket said the sixteen panels wieghed 556...
Hi there, I have some decent off cuts of this stuff left over from our extension, can they be used internally as a tile backer in a bathroom ie: is it compatible with standard bathroom tile adhesive? The tiles will cover an area 1.8 meters by 600 mm high.
Lozzer.
Hey, slow down dude, I never said I employed another man, I've never employed anyone, however some labourers can use a screw driver, I had a labourer assigned with me, it speeds up ceiling work, asking a labourer to measure and cut a sheet while your fixing one is usually a negative exercise so...
The British Gypsum website shows 600 all round for 12.5 mm board (I think)
All the roof trusses and hence top floor ceilings I have done and seen done used to be on 600 centers as far as I remember.
Floor joists I have done have always been on 400 centers.
Lozzer.
Yes that's fine if the timber is constant hardness but it rarely is, knot's wild grain etc, I suspect today there are several attatchments that will set the screw just right.
Lozzer.
Have put up acres of 12.5 mm ceiling on 600 centers all round with noggins at 600 and perimiter noggins, never had any problems or moans, the key is to get the screws just slightly recessed but not to much and at 90 degrees to the face of the board and making sure that the face of the noggins...
Hi there, as said all edges of the PB should be supported, assuming you are fixing the boards counter to the joists then I would recommend noggins at 600 centers between the joists runing for the whole span of the ceiling, dry wall screws are the ones, 32 mm minimum the heads pulled into the PB...
Thanks for the offer but no thanks, my house diy is full time at the moment, besides I would need a decent rate, when I'm on the power it's seventeen pounds an hour...Yeah I know..
Lozzer.
Hi there, I'm on my own and 64 years old, I will manage them some how, used to work down the tin mines and gold mines plus did a lot of forestry/sawmill work, all heavy stuff.
Did a house to flats conversion not that long ago, no access for delivery, had to carry 250 sheets of sound and fire...
Hi and thanks, I double checked with them and they said it's Knauf Aquapanel Exterior, however when they arrive at the local depot is there a way to tell if they are the exterior ones, maybe markings/texture etc?
Lozzer.
Hi there, I'm not in the trade so you guys might get it cheaper, TP's price to me was £18.50 + vat per board (16 boards) that's for the Aquapanel Exterior 2.4m x 900mm x 12.5mm.
Lozzer.
Continuing on my previous thread which has since been closed, I am building a small single storey timber framed extension, the consensus was that Aquapanel would be the way to go for the exterior carrier boards.
My local bm's are Jewsons and Travis Perkins, I called in to Jewsons and asked about...
Yes I assumed it was airborn noise, the acoustic wave still applies, yes basically what I am saying is to acoustically isolate the stud work from any noise eminating from the party wall and the return walls and also the floor if applicable, 2 layers of blocker yes vertical offset is same effect...
If the acoustic wave hits the back of the studs then the timber will transmit the wave to the back of the plasterboard and hence to your ears, sound blocker is definately an improvement over conventional, if fitting a seperate stud frame to carry the board then it would be an idea to stand it...
Hi Richard Brown, as said in my post it's only a small job, basically I will fix the Knauf Aquapanel Exterior, I just need someone to fill and tape the joints, fit any required beadings and then render it all up to a good standard, is that the kind of job you would consider. I am located just...
Thanks Richard, my local BM's are Travis Perkins and Jewsons, I think they both have accounts with Knauf so ordering the boards should not be a problem, I am ok on the fixing side of things so no problem there.
The job is only a small one, about 22 square meters, low profile single storey...
If I use Knauf Aquapanel Exterior panels is there any make of thin coat render that it won't be compatible with? Or is it good for all modern thin coat render systems.
Lozzer
Thanks for that, yes I see the reason for horizontal now so on that basis this is the game plan:
1. Fix tanalised battens vertically over breather membrane and the 600 mm centered studs.
2. Fix 100 mm dpc (verticaly) to cover outside face of batten.
3. Fix Knauf Aquapanel exterior...
Thanks for the knauf recomendation, according to various websites it is available in different sizes, any prefered size? Also in their fixing details it says to fix the boards horizontally, why horizontal and not vertical? Just to recap the extensions timber frame studs will be on 600mm centers...
Thanks for the reply and the welcome, is the knauf aquapanel easily obtainable, do I need to leave an expansion gap between sheets when fixing.
The timber frame studs will be on 600mm centers, I will be fixing the panels with ss screws. basically the outside face of the timber frame will be...
Hi, I am planning on building a small single storey extension using timber frame techniques but I am stumped on which is the best external render board to use, I am not a plasterer and intend to get someone to do the thin coat render, but I will fix the boards in readiness.
Which board would you...
