    Finding A Lad.

Me and the other spread share the labouring after a few disasters trying young lads. The last one somehow got the cable on the refina megamixrer wrapped around the wisk, ripping all the wires out of the trigger housing. He'd listen then do half of what you asked him. He'd also sit in his car...

    minimum wage

I do actually what Andy said, I try to be fair if I see customers are struggling, but at the same time I'm not running a charity. I went to quote a top panel on a ex council semi, it had scabby looking wet dash on it and they wanted a flat finish, sand and cement. There was a lean-to canopy...

    minimum wage

I'm from Sutton as well. In reply to both posts... We have started to try to avoid known shitholes and estates, but when you need to fill gaps in your diary they seem unavoidable. It's easy to fall into that mindset though we're you try to quote fairly for the less privileged customer and...

    minimum wage

Well there you go then. Were they granite? Hardwood? I fitted standard kitchens for 5 years on social housing and we were getting £120 per kitchen, that was 12 years ago. The small kitchens would take you half a day, the units were made up and worktops pre mitred.

    minimum wage

Haha, thank you. I'm talking more Mansfield area. The rates are better in Nottingham city and more affluent areas. We fair better with recommendations but if you end up on places like mybuilder it's difficult. Which areas are you working in?

    minimum wage

Kitchen worktop suppliers usually charge around £60 per mitre cut. So if a joiner is doing supply, cut and fit it's good money. Kitchen fitting has always been expensive to the customer.

    minimum wage

Been discussing this proposed minimum wage today. If it happens I might throw my tools in the nearest skip and f**k off to Sainsburys. £80 plus twenty something? Paid holiday days, a pension and sick pay. Probably be better off. Sites around our way are paying about £136 a day on day rate (if...

who makes the best trowel/s these days

I got my old broken in ragnis out not long ago, one black handle carbon, the other grey handle stainless, still great trowels. Maybe biased because that's what I learnt on.

    The MyBuilder experience

We joined MyBuilder early last year with the view it could infill some gaps in the diary, or be a port in a storm. Most of our work is recommendation or from regular customers (several builders and companies). But last September things went quiet, so we started to dabble on mybuilder. In my...

    worse trade ever! nowadays

Sorry to dig an old thread up lads but wanted to throw my two penneth in... I agree with a lot of what has been said. Been Plastering on and off 20 years but I am actually a Joiner (with city & guilds), I prefer Plastering to be honest. Got laid off then made redundant before the recession, set...

Rendering a Pond Wall 'Olde Worlde'

I know what you mean but I dont think the customer meant that. I could do with finding a gallery of pics and asking her exactly which finish she wants. Thanks for the replies.

Rendering a Pond Wall 'Olde Worlde'

Cheers Carlos. Thats what I was thinking, even thought about using sharp sand for a rougher finish. I've got some salt neutralizer from subbing to a damp firm, might brush the walls down with that first.

    old wooden corner beads

Latest thing I've tried is running masking tape down the wooden bead, so it covers it and the joint. I also pva, then scrim over the thin coat bead wings. Not had any crack yet. I warn customers anyway, there is always some risks skimming old walls and they may have to do some minimal filling.

Rendering a Pond Wall 'Olde Worlde'

Hi all I've been to price a job up this morning and its a bit of an odd one. I mostly do internal work so I'm a bit stuck for ideas on this. Its a 1m high wall around a pond, the wall is around 18m in total with brick pillars at 4m intervals. The pond isn't square either it curves around the...
