Want a demo of a new British Plaster?

It was a discussion that took place, but with a sachet it’s down to human error, even if it’s half a bag of plaster that’s only a guess as would the half of the sachet be. Speeding the setting process up can and does reduce the adhesion of the plaster to the background. That’s why additional...

The problem is if you don’t raise your issues and concerns you will never be heard. I do hear things about issues with products, when possible I visit site to make sure they get tested. It’s your opportunity and all I’m trying to do is make sure you’ve got the links to discuss with the...

    Green grit

If it’s in writing, be that text or email that you have advised them the correct way of doing it i.e. overboard etc and they choose the cheaper option it will stand up in court. Admin is not our strong point but if you use a disclaimer, which each and every of us should use, the liability lies...

Plaster Coat on Cement Parge (1st Timer)

How to speed up screed drying time.

Big difference between setting and drying times
  14. The Apprentice

How to speed up screed drying time.

Speeding up the drying time can effect the the strength of the screed when it’s fully cured. Don’t know about screed but with plaster BG advise not to use dehumidifiers and direct heat. Halogen infrared heaters will help but I’d be careful of putting them in too soon. Weather dependent but the...

    Ply Backing to metal stud

Sound insulation is a science and far more complicated than many of us can begin imagine. Biggest problem is when the jobs done the customer turns a radio on full blast and expects to hear nothing coming out.

    One coat of pva?

UniFinish is no longer made. If it was used correctly it was a lovely plaster to work with. Unfortunately the substrates which were plastered without cleaning the background down ie not removing dust and grease etc failed at times. High suction was also a big problem as well, we’ve all used our...

    Hardwall on damp walls?

If you can't let it dry out properly you always stand the chance that salts will come through so S&C with a salt inhibitor or alternative is Dri-coat but definitely no gypsum

    Death by steaks

I’ve seen it done in front of my eyes when I’ve been out to visit complaints about the plaster. All you need to do is close the face of your trowel in a bit. I have even used the plasterers trowel to prove a point that it’s not the material or the trowel. Sometimes it’s your technique that...

Sand and cement scratch coat on solid brick?

If you’ve got no damp no need for S&c and can be floated with hardwall. You might as well insulate it with thermal boards or stud & insulate though with it being an external wall. Might be an idea to do the other side of the breast, if that’s what it is at the same time.

    Blebs

Finish will bleb if the background is to wet, no suction or applied thickly

    Gypsum and clay plaster

Can’t help you on this one I’m afraid. BG have not tested it and I have never tried it. You could try it on a test bale I suppose but what would or could happen over time is anyone’s guess. My thoughts would be that it could compromise it and I personally wouldn’t want to take that risk.
  27. The Apprentice

No idea, maybe they’ve had a run but no issues with supply on plaster

    Employed or self employed??

You’ve still got a lot to learn. I did an apprenticeship but I’d say it was 7 or 8 years before I thought of myself as a plasterer. My advice would be, do foreigners at the weekend and build up your reputation till you’ve got not only the confidence but more importantly the client base before...

OK let me rephrase my comment, who, except Andy, gauges their water out?
  36. The Apprentice

    Carlite

Due to the full guarantee that is offered by BG satchels don’t work, who gauges the water out, how much is left in the satchet, how much blows away, to much or to little added. The only way for the guarantee to work is to have a bagged product.

  41. The Apprentice

    Carlite

No idea on the Carlite tbh. One thing I’m pretty sure of is that Uni, if it ever came back would need a whole new set of instructions and a new name. It’s a shame because it was a lovely plaster to work with though.

    Roller textured finish

Never heard of it before but if that what the client wants.... Maximum thickness on board with one coat is 8mm and 2mm with board and multi so bear that in mind when you choose the material.
