if your doing a few hundred quid re skim fair enough,or a one man band.
if your running a professional outfit and people are spending 1000s of pounds rendering there house, and its warranted work why do you want paying straight away for it before you leave, smacks of desperation.
there has to be trust both ways, build up enough cash flow in your business to take it, makes no difference to me if they pay me straight away or in 2 weeks. if your working for devlopers there on account if you asked to get paid straight away youd be laughed at. petty cash for a meal don't know what your on about there.

Why does it? This is part of whats wrong with the construction industry. Whats desperate about wanting payment for the work you've done?

If your van breaks down do the garage fix it then invoice you? No, you pay and then get ur keys back.

Do you go out for dinner and get an invoice for ur meal? No.

The amount of times i've had people ask me to "pop back" in a few days is a joke.

I
I agree with you there bud if people are so keen to get a job done then they should be just as keen to pay on completion. :RpS_thumbup:

Also, with domestic work we often carry out our works whilst the customer is away on their holidays. I couldn't be banging the door the moment their home. Rather wait for them to call me and ok everything once there home and settled and then bill them.

So its unprofessional to want paying for the service you provide to private customers? As i said, other trades or ongoing business is another matter, thats a trust situation but joe public??

Your missing my point, it's not about cash flow.

I'm not knocking anyone if thats how they run their affairs just my view on it.

We all had the call.can you come and price plastering my loft ive done the boarding myself the customer said. ImageUploadedByThe Plasterers Forum1426545494.993158.jpg ImageUploadedByThe Plasterers Forum1426545547.093880.jpg ImageUploadedByThe Plasterers Forum1426545584.341851.jpg

Again this is a seperate issue, if someone is willing to leave you the keys to their home for the convenience both ways of the work being done while their away then yes of course you'd extend the courtesy of letting them settle in and look the job over. Then next day...payday.

fair enough.

I agree with owls on this one.i like to complete the job then email the invoice off.i expect the payment within 30 days on completion.i have guys to pay but have built up a decent enough business to cover this.
Did a job a few weeks back and the guy brought the cheque put whilst cleaning up.didnt even send him a invoice,I was speechless tbh!!!

Thats how it should be. I won't change my mind on this one.

Private customers - payment on completion.

Regular customers i.e a builder or developer - payment within a week or so, don't take the piss.

Regardless of bank balance its a matter of principles. That's how it is and always will be for me regardless of any success i may have.

If 7/30 day invoices work for you then hats off to you all but why you think it builds any form of trust is lost on me.

Each to their own though

You say pay on completion.how many actually do though.coming out on the day with the cheque or bacs that evening you finish the job is rare.im not saying I say to them I want paying within the month but don't expect paying within a few days.
Your right for wanting payment as that's why we do what we do

In my time prob had 10 not with payment ready, lots have asked if icould pop back later when their partners home which is fine if were local.

Lots asked if i can come back in a few days, always said no too busy on other jobs. Simple

Usually any job I do under a grand the customer will waiting to give me the money when I'm finished, cheque transfer and sometimes cash whitch is fine with as long as I give them a invoice/receipt so it can be put through the books.on larger jobs it is similar I just ask their payment method, give them an invoice(with no pay by date on) and it is always payed that week.
Note;builders pay me when they feel like it,I've just learned to deal with that over the years.

Same as you mate. I work for a kitchen fitter regularly anf he gets 7 days. Everyone else is payment on day of completion. Even a builder I work for always comes on the day im finishing and squares up. I often get left I someones house on my own so theirs no trust issues so I don't understand how waiting for payment shows trust?

Just had a mate lay a concrete base for me. he had a key and turned up unexpectedly to finish so I wasn't here. had the cash waiting in the house and he said he'd pop in when hes passing. Got sick of waiting so took it to his yard.

Any time i've had work done in my house im the same. Money there waiting for them even if its a mate.

There's no possible reason to invoice and wait for a private customer. None at all.

You've turned up on time, got materials out of your own pocket, spent time working there and done a tidy job. At that point how does walking away and crossing your fingers for payment to show help your business?

If someone ever said i know a great plasterer he waits 10 days for money instead of he's clean tidy and does a good job i'd be gutted. Maybe one day i'll be worth a few quid and see it different though

I've never waited for payment once either, sod that to many rouges about these days. I always get payment as soon as finished without asking. If it's regular customers i will accept bank transfers...But been messed about with them before and have to keep chasing them.

I put on my quotes, Payment due on completion....

Personally i show trust by taking zero deposits or money until the jobs done and turning up on time. Other than that its payday [emoji106]

If it works for u though fair play

Stupidity that mate I used to do it, now always take 10% deposit and stage payments based on progress.

Yeah to be fair almost all of our work is site based now so for the few privates we do it's easy to just do payment on completion and if people cancel its no real drama.

If all our work was private I'd probably be looking at a deposit as well purely to stop people cancelling work if nothing else. Staged payment on decent sized jobs but for a few rooms I don't think it's worth it

Private side i always got paid at the end but I see the point about the rendering firms....

Different league I suppose

Do explain....

I'm still waiting to hear a valid reason it builds trust. Aside from waiting for the relevant people to sign work off why would you wait.

what you on about the old invoice and hope it shows you tit.
just because its how you operate doesn't mean everyones the same. I for one ,just work like most other business and invoice monthly and its served me well over the years, on a scale of 10 grand ish plus a week.there is no right or wrong way is there.

Well if you turnover half a million a year and i turn over 40-50k then to be fair i'd say yes there is a right way....yours.

You TIT.

I know its the least of the problems but i hate it when people dont clean off the verge tiles/soffit. Can ruin a good job.

Also when people don't flatten in dash under sills. Another small detail that makes a big difference.
