Have I doomed myself with asbestos removal

Hi All,

probably will get told I’ve been very stupid or man up but need peoples opinion.

I took down my artex ceiling on the weekend which was asbestos positive which was on plasterboard and ontop of a lath and plaster ceiling (fun one)

Took place over a night and day So ceiling was 12m2. Intially I put on the x tex compound on the ceiling dpm on the floor and walls wearing an eclipse ffp3 mask of screwfix both times with type 5/6 coverall.

the ceiling was cut in small panels with a recip saw and multi tool and I was using a pressure sprayer as I went along and basically soaking the ceiling. Some dust was omitted but it looked more of a brown dust so I assumed this was more the lath or plasterboard above the artex

My concerns are about 3/4 of the way through my dpm sheets fell down and I had to remove the debris like maybe like a m2 total by sweeping and wiping.

the artex covered plasterboard was mostly taken off in pieces around 30x30cm pieces

Then next day when taking it to a asbestos Center near me all bags were soaked and the dpm sheets we’re soaked and bagged

my concerns are

the Friday night as I still had a short beard on he mask kept riding up not providing a face fitting
Saturday it was a much tighter fit
I’ve done work with a mask before in nieveity like removing coving when artex asbestos was attached to the bottom side but nothing like this

the other ceilings are getting done by a specialist but have I already made a monumental error.

applogies I know they is alot of posts of this nature but none with the method I have done with

Well if you've got problems after 12sqm most of us on here are proper f**k*d having stripped and scraped 1000's of sqm of old Artex ceilings.
Napoleon wants to know what size boots you wear?

Thanks for the reply I’ve read a lot on here same story where they removed loads in the 80s ect no mask and dry scraping ect but then people say some people get it from screw holes ect. Think my worry just mental due to asthma and wanting to live past 50 lol

It'll be the end of you that.

I'm wondering what size boots you wore and if your wife will be selling your power tools

TO be honest we don't know..... very much like @essexandy as plasterers we have eaten that much asbestos over the years that we cant worry about it.

It is what it is....
Yeah sorry if I sounded abrupt it’s just I know a plasterer personally who died at 48 from lung cancer a few years ago (was never realised if it was due to asbestos) like you all said how much you mix over the years think I’m probly just one of them people who worry to much

Unless your robbing banks ! (y)

there was a bloke called Malcom Mc Claren in the 1970's who had a shop in the Kings Rd in London, he was a punk, he thought it would be good fun one day to smash a big hole in the ceiling above his tills in the shop, ceiling was riddled with asbestos. It took about 40 years but he eventually did die of Mesothelioma.

The shop was named "s*x" being a fetish clothing shop.

He wasn't a punk in the slightest and only liked 50's music, had no clue about music, according to reports. Have you privy to his autopsy per chance ?

Vivian Westwood also spent a lot of time there, in the shop, co running "s*x" and designing the clothing on sale.
She died last year at age 82.

No treble Zero, I was busy that day and couldn't make it down to the doctors,

Now who the bloody hell are you and how do you know my name?

Your probly right a lot of the stories I have read are major exposure just let’s say lesson learned leave it to the professionals
Just take some deep breaths, have a kip, will feel much better in the morning . Then move on as normal .
