Plaster over artex ceiling

Members online

Plan to plaster over old artex ceiling. Using magic mix (roughly 70% multi, 30% Bonding ) then top coat of multi once magic mix firms a bit. I'm going to PVA the ceiling but before I do I wondered if cleaning the ceiling with sugar soap was recommended? It's a living room and also a kitchen ceiling?
Heard similar scenarios where plaster didn't adhere properly due to dirt/grease etc? Cheers for any info...

If there’s any dirt or grease on the kitchen area part of the ceiling sugar soap it clean even if there is signs of grease or grime that isn’t cleaned it will bleed through to the plaster once dry,for 100% guarantee always best to overboard the ceiling

I think that is the @zombie mix? Not bad for light texture. Had a heavy texture recently and did 70 bonding...30 multi...flattened with spat then top coated with multi...came out a treat.
Great to hear that mate, I'll bare the ratio in mind for bigger texture.
Think the mix Is commonly referred to as 'Magic mix'. How long did you wait before first coat of multi/bond and then multi coat?

Artex is difficult to wash over.
T-Bar washer I use if I can, if it is not too rough. That is a real quick way along with cleaning liquid.
PVA is fine but buy the good stuff imo.
Loads of different sealer that can be used.
I mostly use gardz and when dry go with PVA.
Others like SBR.
Many use PVA no with problems.

Cheers for tips mate, I'll take this onboard. One of the artex ceilings has a hairline crack running about 2.5 Meters...the ceiling is sound, no movement from it when I pushed up at the crack or anything...would scrim tape be Ideal to put along crack pre plaster and post cleaning?

Just risk it, life, time and money are more important.

If its questionable, SBR it the c**t.

Coz I've Heard SBR never goes tacky, just either wet or dry but seals it. So wondered if best to put a tacky PVA on after sealed with SBR. Rather skip the tacky PVA tho if possible but don't want to find out the hard way lol

Understood mate, I just associate pva with plaster and sbr with cement, I don't understand why people recommend both.
I would pva and leave to dry overnight, then pva again and skim while tacky as the plaster will stick better. Hope job turns out well.

same as, only use I ever heard of sbr for is adding to neat cement for scudding walls or sealing screeds, I met one bloke once who told me he added it to sand and cement render and it wouldn't stick to the wall. I said nothing.
at a push you might use it to seal an old wall, but sbr won't help anything stick to anything, it's not a glue,
it's liquid rubber.

I spilt some SBR in the back of my van and didn't notice for a week, there was some timber on the van floor that it went under. When I tried to lift it was stuck fast. Had to use a crow bar and ended up ripping the ply on the van floor. It was crazy strong as an adhesive.

interesting, next time i'm on site and a carpenter runs out of pva I'll tell him to use sbr to glue his timbers together.
