Whats on this wall

Hi,

I have started removing plaster from a wall showing signs of damp (tide/water marks and peeling paint at base of wall), 1900 house. Solid brick internal wall. Concrete floor. Moved in six years ago and had done damp work carried out to a number of walls. This wall had chemical injection to other side and replastered on other side of wall.
What is that black stuff likely to be I’m seeing along one section of the wall?

Probably tarmac

Syanthproofe. It was used in the 60s 70s as a damp proof / tanking membrane. Skud the membrane with sharpe sand leave till dry the float and set wall.

What do you mean by skud the membrane?

Any thoughts on best way to stop damp returning? I know there’s lots of different views out there on damp. Somebody has mentioned limelite so the wall can release any moisture.

Is this room below ground level?
As the synthaproofe membrane has now been broken, it may need a new tanking system.

No it’s above ground level. Can see a dpc in the brickwork.
