I don't know where you're from but all merchants and pits sell building, plastering and sharp sand.
Like I said we have grade a , red, silver(crushed granite) and mortar mix which is grade a mixed with red. Everyone’s sand is different depends where u r from in the country I suppose.

So is the red loamy? Some of our local building sand is very red and is full of loam/silt, loads of shrinkage.

Where I’m from there’s no plastering sand or building sand, u must be buying your sand from diy stores. All merchants sell grade a / red / mortar mix / silver sand
Travis, jewsons etc sell plastering sand as do selco diy sheds etc

The reds really coarse that’s y they mix it with gradeA, cause that’s soft/fine. I’d say our grade a is your building sand possibly

Was it washed properly

Missed this post. Building sand isn't suitable for rendering. Too much shrinkage with most of it. I think we may have found the problem.
Andy it OK to use building sand indoors.? But whatever he's got ther it his problem!

Like my old man before me I've always used pit (building) sand inside for floating, but have been fussy about which one I use. They vary a hell of a lot in our area.

So say that sand was s**t. Can the scratch be ok. And the top blow! So many things can go wrong with rendering better just stik to internal work!

To be honest I find it hard to believe that the wrong sand or the wrong ratios would cause a serious failure so quickly.
