A few questions if any of you know would appreciate the help thanks , trying to get my stall in order for taking my apprentice on but really struggling as I just not got a clue about it all
Do I have to have him signed up to a contract before a certain date to get the funding ?
The college said I have to have a code for him but I haven’t a clue what code they were on about, the college said someone will ring with this code is this right ? Or should I be doing something to push for this
Thanks lads

Don't do it. Its not worth it for u madness costs u a fortune just get a piss head a few days a week pay it cash

I get you Andy and Clemo but this is my nephew I’m taking on he’s on the course I’m gonna give him all the help I can , I thought it through for a while and he’s been out a fair few times to see that he wants it and the drive is there mate
Only live once so my thinking is better to of tried and then regret rather than not tried and look back and regret
The college have offered another dude too which did get me thinking to take two but I’d need time with these and the work also so gonna just see how I get on with one

Good for you mate , appreciate your family good intentions

My nephew was keen , lasted two weeks :tonto:
I'd take him on for several jobs before you commit to the bureaucracy

Absolute worst scenario IMHO.
I took my nephew on years ago. We had a great relationship before hand. He started well but turned into a living nightmare. Kept him on way longer than I should have because he was family. Once I'd sacked him it was really awkward all round for both of us with the family.
We get on just great again now, but I wish I'd never given him a start.

Yeah, but I'd be philosophical about all that, Andy - let's face it, if you'd refused to give him a try, he (and some of the family) might've held a grudge against you for years and blamed you for ruining his chances in life. So, really a case of 'damned if you do; damned if you don't'. The important thing is that you have now repaired the relationship after it going sour (y)

The advantage of taking on an apprentice is that they can be taught how to do the work the way you like it done. Any subbies or plasterers you get, if they are good have plenty of work on.
The disadvantage is there are a lot of useless ones that you may have to try before you get a good one.
Stay away from family and friends who's boy/girl is looking for work, if it turns bad it will be all your fault.
You want someone not too bright or too thick , too bright they will be taking work off you in three year time, too thick it will be hard work teaching them.
Go for a long trial period before starting the paper work. Nothing wrong with keeping them on site with you for a year, then if you are both happy, start the apprenticeship.
Don't forget how bad you were when you were 16 years old.
Grant for taking on an apprentice is good but only if you can one that is willing to work.
What you telling me for its vincey you need to aim that at I only get people in to lab on me because I'm a fking plastering machine
Thanks.

Like a prat I offered him a start, no one in the family was expecting me to take him on.

Hi @Vincey a mate of mine is a HR specialist, if you wanted some advice regarding employment laws etc I’m sure he would happily have a chat about it with you
