gordon reardon in carlisle has died and his wife a few days later both from covid virus,
he was 87 years old and still plastering at 86 years old , a good man highly regarded and respected in the plastering community here,.........also did a lot of cornice work over the years and travelled to u.s.a./singapore with his work
he had a brother who was also a plasterer who worked until he was 84 years old ,
malc,/zombie/hobo/rigsby etc are just a few of the older ones on this forum , who are very experienced and helpful in giving there advice, along with many others,........but gordon started work 1948 before anybody on this forum was born,.......what a totally different world a building site was then, how he kept going all these years , i could not do it, i have had enough at 60 ,
he was always but always helpful with advice, ....... r.i.p. gordon.

P.s I was born in 1984

RIP to Gordon

Some people are just lucky and end up doing something they actually enjoy doing for a living. Personally my attention span for new stuff or Owt for that matter seems to be about 4 or five years and then I want to do something new or certainly different.

Old school had dedicated labourers but their work was heavier. None of this dib and dab b*ll***s. He was made of strong stuff to be doing it into his 80’s.
@hector
My old boss was still working into his late 70’s.
Only takes one little thing at that age to bring them down fast. So fragile.

Yep and the dust and the like, no masks or ppe in them days.
my old gaffer worked into his 70s too, when he was an apprentice he had to wear a shirt and tie, and at snap time wasn't allowed to sit with time served spreads...I remember my first day at 17 as a first year apprentice and I turned up in trackie bottoms, he ripped me another arsehole for that.

Damn shame that respect for our trade is gone. Mostly tramps in trackies nowadays

i happened to be working near a job gordon was on, i can see him now carrying bags of multi and boards etc , but like your boss rossi , he loved the plastering work and the banter etc, keeps me going he used to say to me,
phoned him up one night i wanted a dozen angle beads, merchants were closed and we had no wickes at the time, of course hector he said come round, he would not accept a penny for them, i know what its like he said, top man
