But if he's not going to labour properly why would anyone want him around?

As long as he's not cocking-up the job (knows his place & doesn't overstep the mark without permission), then free labour hardly seems unfair exchange, but I appreciate this thread will divide opinion. Ultimately, he's offering and no one is being coerced into accepting.

"If you don't ask, you don't get" etc.

I can't knock the guy for using a bit of initiative and respectfully understanding that knowledge is legitimate payment for his labour.

However, Cockney's right about the weekends - that bit was bloody outrageous!!

If you were labouring properly what makes you think you'll have much time to learn?
Just putting it out there I’m not a kid fresh out of school been in diff trades for over 15 years after I left the forces..just offering free labour lol if I don’t learn much I’ll still gain something just being around it?

I took on a lad from here ,he'd been taught by his dad ,. I kept him for a few weeks but it was too hard to correct his mistakes, he wanted to start late, drink.coffee ,have breaks ,finish early, at 55 they're hard to change
I hardly call 2.45 finishing early!! Your a slave driver wit your 3 bag days!!
And I'm 54 and 10months old!!! I won't tell you again...

He wants to watch, not labour. Wants a free education basically. To then become a competitor. But only on the weekend as he has work commitments in the week.
We’re did I say I want to watch I want to labour and I’ll put in a shift..and not a free education gonna be doing city and guilds lol everyone stays somewhere don’t they? I’m gonna be working all week and then offering to labour for free on the only days I have off? Not an unfair ask is it ?

I don't believe a word of it - you live nowhere near Glasgow!

Excellent that's settled then. He'll be with you every weekend starting from the weekend after next. Good man.

If I just wanted to watch I’d just sit on my arse and stick YouTube on...
As andy says if you're labouring properly. That's not learning to plaster. They're entirely different things. Especially at weekends. Its not a trade you just pick up. Either bite the bullet and work for a spread full time and just forget the s**t course you want to do (which it will be. They're all f**k**g dogshit and churn out s**t spreads who can only skim, use gorilla tubs and s**t expensive tape to fix their beads on)

Or stay doing the current job

Or do a proper gas safe course. Much better money to earn and far less strain on your body.

Any work must be paid, otherwise, the motivation to do a good job very quickly disappears, and the person is not motivated even if you study. I think so
