Hi All, I’ve got a bungalow that requires fully rendering and would appreciate a plasterer’s opinion on the best render product. It’s 1936ish construction brick external leaf using a black ash mortar, wall ties have been replaced with old tie ends isolated. Believe it was rendered a couple of times over the brickwork, beds/ perps are all sizes along with some damaged bricks. I’m going to replace the damaged bricks and am thinking of repointing with a lime mortar before having the whole thing rendered. Ideally I want a roughcast type finish and was thinking Weberpral but was recommended Johnstone’s, hear negative things about k-rend so am struggling with product choice. Any advice from the pro’s would be very gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

i would not bother to repoint if i was going for render. have you considered an external wall insulation ?

All monocouche is s*** but it looks nice rough cast nothing wrong with Weber or Johnstone's, prb is good as far as monocouche goes give Ryan a call plasterers1stopshop he will give you the details and sort you a price.

Negative things about krend?

Probably by chancers who have f**k*d jobs up when it was the 'go to' name.

I was using k rend nearly 20 years ago, it was dross then, it’s still dross now.
Although there base products are very good there bagged top coats are gash compared to others on the market.

Compared to others yes.
I'd choose others over them

But I wouldn't go saying they're s**t, end product look no different, if anything neater-consistent aggregate.

Had no issues enough to warn someone to steer clear of it. Ever.

you can only advise on experience. my experience of k rend is it slumps, there’s a chance of it grinning for no apparent reason, the back up service is none existent. it’s not just me that says that take a look at other threads on here about it, my lads won’t use it, plus you need to fanny about and change the r+s on the machine for it.
Your right it’s not s**t but compared to others on the market it’s just not as good in my opinion. I don’t consider my self chancers we carry out 1000s and 1000s of square metres of scratch render a year.

It'd be my 3rd choice or lower!

If a customer says to me, "I'm adamant i want it" - fine I'll do it and use it.

9/10 though - do ask 'which do I recommend and what would I use on my house....'

Different answer.

You get the same.
Thats why.

Every layman mistakes mono for the brand name k rend.

You then have to explain others etc..

Thanks gents for taking the time to reply to my question, it’s really appreciated.
I’m leaning towards Weberpral M. The substrate is 1930s clay brick with a lime/black ash mortar, the brickwork is shocking with beds and perps of all sizes.
I believe that this old masonry doesn’t like cement pointing or render over it and would be better to have a lime render or modern breathable type product. Do you think Weberpral M would be ok or have any suggestions for a different product? Once again thanks for your advice.
Best regards all.
